PGA DFS: DraftKings Fantasy Golf Sleeper Picks and Advice for The Open Championship (Part Two)

Course description and high-priced picks for the Open Championship can be found in Part One here.

Editor’s Note: Our Partner DraftKings is hosting the biggest ever Fantasy Golf tournament this weekend . The Open Champinonship Millionaire Maker has a jaw dropping $1,000,000 prize to first place and $3,000,000 in total prizes, and it's only $20 to enter!

If you sign up and make a deposit now, you’ll get a 100% bonus on your first DraftKings deposit. We’ll also give you free access to RotoBaller’s Premium MLB DFS Lineup Picks and Tools (a $29.99 monthly value).

PGA DFS Mid-Priced DraftKings Picks ($7,000-$8,800)

Tiger Woods ($8,600 Vegas 20-1)

I correctly predicted how he would play two weeks ago at the Greenbrier Classic and will be correct again this week. Tiger will show up to play at St. Andrews, as he always has, and will be in contention on Sunday. He’s won the course twice, in 2000 and 2005, and finished three under, tied for 23rd in 2010. His game looks to be turned around after the Greenbrier Classic, and he comes back to a place where he loves to play. If there is one place where he can finally end his major skid it is at St. Andrews.

Lee Westwood ($8,000 Vegas 70-1)

Westy was the player to take the number one in the world ranking from Woods back in 2010. That year, he finished 2nd at the U.S. Open and 2nd at the Open Championship, which just so happened to be here. At the Masters and U.S. Open he vastly underperformed, finishing tied for 46th and tied for 50th respectively. Last year at the Open Championship he was cut. Westy is one of the most notable hit or miss players. However, if he finishes top five with a price like this it will pay dividends.

Matt Kuchar ($7,900 Vegas 65-1)

Kuchar is my sleeper pick to win this tournament. He recently tied for second at the Scottish Open along with Raphael Jacquelin. His best finish in the British Open came three years back when he finished tied for 9th. His last time playing at St. Andrews he finished tied for 27th. Kuchar just played great golf on a links course, and I see him carrying that over to the Open.

Graeme McDowell ($7,600 Vegas 75-1)

The 2010 U.S. Open winner grew up playing links courses in his native country of Northern Ireland. McDowell shot a five under, tying for 31st, at the Scottish Open this past week. Although he was cut at this past U.S. Open, he has had good finishes at the Open Championship. He tied for 9th last year, and two years before that tied for fifth. At St. Andrews in 2010, McDowell tied for 23rd, and at St. Andrews in 2005 he tied for 11th. He will have great home support in the crowd cheering him on, which should only further assist McDowell in his quest for the Claret Jug.

Quick Hitters

Jason Dufner ($7,400 Vegas 100-1) could surprise

Ernie Els ($7,200 Vegas 125-1) will not have a good tournament; he is simply overmatched by the competition.

PGA DFS Low-Priced DraftKings Picks ($5,800- $6,900)

Thomas Aiken ($6,700)

Aiken has been playing well this year. He finished tied for 26th at the Memorial Tournament and tied for 25th at the U.S. Open. He hasn’t finished outside the top 50 on the European Tour this year. In 2009 he tied for eighth and in 2012 tied for seventh at the Open Championship.

Edoardo Molinari ($6,500 Vegas 550-1)

Vegas clearly isn’t a fan of Molinari, putting him as the largest long shot, along with the likes of John Daly, Tom Watson, and David Duval. I’ve been picking his younger brother, Francesco, on numerous occasions, but not this time. To put it simply, Molinari has been playing such dreadful golf on the European Tour, that his best finish was tied for 15th at the Tshwane Open. His next best finish is tied for 33rd. In 2010 he made the Ryder Cup team and won the Scottish Open. I know he doesn’t sound enticing, but he can play on links courses. Last year he tied for 7th at the Open, and five years ago at St. Andrews he tied for 27th. If there were one tournament he would show up for it’s this one.

David Lingmerth ($6,400)

Lingmerth played in two majors his whole career, both in 2013. He was cut at the Open Championship but tied for 17th at the U.S. Open. Lingmerth won the Memorial Tournament and finished tied for 6th at the Greenbrier last week. He has made 12 of 21 cuts and is worth a look as a low-priced player to help even out your lineup.

Stay away from Morgan Hoffman ($6,600)

While he may seem like a low risk high reward type pick, he is in for a bumpy ride here at St. Andrews. His driving has been atrocious as of recently, and I don’t think he can maintain any sort of composure on such a high-stakes course.

Stay away from Nick Faldo ($5,800)

If you are thinking of taking Faldo, then you should not even be playing in Draftkings tournament this week. Faldo is a commentator for CBS, and although he was once a great player, he pretty much is coming out of retirement to play the Old Course once more.
