Is Ryan Tannehill a Free Agent? Top Landing Spots for Tannehill This Offseason

In 2019, the Miami Dolphins traded starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill to the Tennessee Titans. As part of the trade, Tannehill signed a one-year, $7 million deal with Tennessee to back up then-starter Marcus Mariota. The latter was eventually benched, and Tannehill took the opportunity and ran with it. After his stellar play, he was rewarded with a four-year, $118 million contract.

2023 was a difficult season for Tannehill. He suffered an ankle injury and was replaced as starter by rookie Will Levis. As a result, Tennessee opted not to re-sign the 11-year veteran this offseason.

With his contract up, is Tannehill still a free agent? Where will he sign? Let’s take a look and explore some options.

Is Ryan Tannehill a Free Agent?

Tannehill has not yet signed with a new club and remains a free agent. Many teams have already made moves to bolster their quarterback rooms. Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson, Gardner Minshew, Mason Rudolph, and Jacoby Brissett have all found new homes before the former Tennessee starter.

At this point, he’s probably faced with signing a one-year deal close to the veteran minimum. It’s looking like Tannehill will have to wait until after the NFL Draft to find a new team.

Which Teams Would be the Best Fit for Ryan Tannehill?

Denver Broncos

Denver is the most obvious landing spot. It seems like a lock it will add to its quarterback room. Jarrett Stidham currently sits atop the depth chart. Denver’s plans for the NFL Draft are a little unclear. If it doesn’t select a signal-caller, it’s likely Tannehill will be brought in to compete for the starting job.

Las Vegas Raiders

It’s possible Tannehill will wind up in Las Vegas as a depth signing. However, the Raiders signed Gardner Minshew in free agency and owner Mark Davis has reportedly given approval for the team to trade up in the draft for a quarterback. Tannehill could potentially wind up with Las Vegas, but it doesn’t feel likely based on the Raiders’ offseason moves.

New York Giants

New York reportedly has interest in selecting a quarterback in next week's draft. It did sign starter Daniel Jones to a contract extension last offseason, but the fact it is entertaining the idea means it is not entirely happy with the position. Tannehill could be brought in as further competition for Jones and possibly wrestle the starting job away.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints are in need of a new backup after losing Jameis Winston in free agency. Tannehill would be a good veteran to have behind starter Derek Carr. If things go sideways, or Carr struggles, coach Dennis Allen could trot Tannehill out there in a desperate attempt to save his job.
