Ronny Mauricio has been a top prospect in the New York Mets farm system for the past several years. The shortstop has been developing in the minor leagues since 2018, accumulating 1,887 at-bats over various levels of action.
Mauricio is putting together his best campaign in the minors yet, slashing .322/.365/.543 with 10 home runs, 37 RBI, and 11 stolen bases in 258 at-bats at Triple A-Syracuse this year. The 22-year-old is poised to join the major leagues at some point in 2023 as he reaches the peak of his developmental phase in the minors.
When can fantasy managers expect to see the dynamic infielder get the promotion? Let’s get into it.
How Close Is Ronny Mauricio's Call-Up To The Bigs?
After a raging-hot May where he hit .367 (40-for-109) with 16 extra-base hits, Mauricio had tapered off to start June. He was just 6-for-38 over his first nine games in the month and suffered a left ankle bone bruise during the swoon on June 10 to rub salt in the wound.
Mauricio put a screeching halt to his slump with a two-homer outburst on June 15. It was notably the middle infielder's first game playing in left field, too.
Where Would Ronny Mauricio Fit On The Major-League Roster?
While Mauricio plays shortstop by trade, he is being groomed by New York’s player development staff to man second base and now potentially even left field. He has operated at the keystone for 36 contests in 2023. With Francisco Lindor under contract until 2032, there’s unlikely to be an opening at short any time soon, which is just a hunch considering that length.
Jeff McNeil has functioned as New York’s primary second baseman, but the reigning NL batting champion is hitting .273 with merely 12 extra-base hits this season. The Mets have a hole in left field that’s yet to be fully filled by either Mark Canha or Tommy Pham. McNeil has covered the corner outfield positions quite a bit already this year, further paving the way for Mauricio’s transition to the bigs.
Something of a youth movement has already been embraced in Queens with fellow top prospects Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, and Mark Vientos all brought up to this point. If New York cannot significantly improve on their 32-36 record by the trade deadline, the louder the cries for a full-fledged youth transition will reverberate.
It’s only a matter of time before New York's No. 6 prospect gets his first taste of MLB play. Whether Mauricio gets elevated before the July deadline or not remains to be seen, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see it occur before then. The speedy switch-hitter should be stashed in most deep mixed leagues, and those in shallow formats should give him some attention after his most recent explosion. Mauricio would bring an extremely intriguing combination of pop and speed to the table upon his promotion.
