6 days agoDetroit Tigers outfielder Mark Canha (illness) is out of the starting lineup again on Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians due to an upper respiratory infection. "He's not feeling well. It hasn't been a great road trip health-wise (for the team), so we're kind of quarantining him at this point to get him away from the rest of us until further notice," manager A.J. Hinch said. It will be the second straight game missed for the 35-year-old, who is hitting .248 (29-for-117) so far in 2024 with five home runs, 16 RBI and 17 runs scored for the Tigers. Check back on Friday to see if Canha is feeling good enough to play in the series opener against the Houston Astros after a scheduled off day on Thursday. Colt Keith will serve as the designated hitter and will bat fifth on Wednesday against Guardians right-hander Tanner Bibee.Source: Detroit Free Press - Evan Petzold
6 days agoLos Angeles Dodgers right-hander Emmet Sheehan (forearm) hasn't thrown off a mound yet, but he's progressing well and has been ramping up the intensity of his long-toss program. Sheehan has been throwing after being shut down in the middle of April due to a right-forearm injury that he suffered in mid-March in spring training. The 24-year-old will be eligible to return from the 60-day injured list on May 18, but that's probably not going to happen given the fact that he has yet to pitch all season to this point. But if Sheehan can avoid any setbacks from here on out, he should be able to rejoin the Dodgers' big-league roster before the All-Star break. He debuted in the majors in 2023 and went 4-1 with a 4.92 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 26 walks and 64 strikeouts in 60 1/3 innings over 13 appearances (11 starts).Source: Los Angeles Time - Jack Harris
6 days agoLos Angeles Dodgers right-hander Bobby Miller (shoulder) threw a bullpen session on Monday. "Velocity was good. He'll throw another one. ... From everything I've seen (a rehab assignment) is coming pretty quickly, which is really encouraging," manager Dave Roberts said. This was Miller's second bullpen session since he was placed on the injured list on April 13 due to right-shoulder inflammation. The 25-year-old is going to need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment soon, but it's unclear if he'll need to make more than one start on the farm before rejoining the Dodgers' starting rotation. Despite posting a 5.40 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 11 2/3 innings in his first three starts in 2024 before getting hurt, Miller needs to be rostered in all fantasy formats for his high-end strikeout upside with the best offense in baseball backing him each time out.Source: Orange County Register - Bill Plunkett
6 days agoLos Angeles Dodgers outfielder Jason Heyward (back) did more hitting/baserunning on Tuesday and will take live batting practice in San Diego this weekend. Heyward is getting closer to a minor-league rehab assignment, which could last between two and five games, according to manager Dave Roberts. The 34-year-old left-handed hitter also took batting practice on the field before last Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves and finally appears to be putting his back injury in the rearview mirror after originally landing on the injured list way back on April 3. Given how good rookie outfielder Andy Pages has looked since debuting in the big leagues, Heyward may struggle for regular playing time in LA's outfield when he returns from the injured list.Source: Los Angeles Time - Jack Harris
6 days agoLos Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) threw his second bullpen session on Tuesday. Manager Dave Roberts said the session consisted of 20 pitches (all four-seam fastballs), and that Kershaw's left shoulder continues to feel good. His next steps will be ramping up in bullpens and mixing in breaking pitches. The skipper said it's all been "really encouraging" so far. The 36-year-old future Hall of Famer is recovering from left-shoulder surgery last November and is slowly ramping up as he attempts to return to LA's starting rotation after the All-Star break. Kershaw has been injury-prone in recent years, but when he's been healthy, he's been fantasy relevant with the best offense in baseball backing him.Source: Los Angeles Time - Jack Harris

6 days agoKansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez is getting a breather on Wednesday against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. Freddy Fermin will do the catching for right-hander Brady Singer and will bat eighth in the order against Brewers right-hander Joe Ross. It's a regular day of rest for Perez in a day game after a night game. The 33-year-old backstop has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball to start the 2024 season, as he's slashing .326/.387/.558 with a .945 OPS, eight home runs, a league-leading 31 RBI and 15 runs scored in 129 at-bats. Perez should be back in action for the Royals for the series opener in Los Angeles on Thursday against the Angels. Fermin is batting just .218 (12-for-55) with a homer and two RBI and is low-upside streamer in DFS in the eight-hole on Wednesday.Source: MLB.com
6 days agoSt. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is out of the team's starting lineup on Wednesday for the series finale against the visiting New York Mets. Alec Burleson will get the start at first base and will hit fifth against Mets left-hander Jose Quintana. Goldschmidt is hitting .545 with a 1.651 OPS, three home runs and 11 RBI in 22 career at-bats against Quintana in his career, but the slugging 36-year-old right-hander has also gone hitless so far in the month of May and could use a day off to clear his head. Goldy, like many of St. Louis' hitters, has been ice-cold to start the year and is currently slashing just .195/.287/.263 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 133 at-bats. Burleson went 3-for-5 with a home run on Tuesday but is also hitting just .188 (3-for-16) with a homer and four RBI against lefties this year.Source: MLB.com
6 days agoToronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette has been dropped to sixth in the batting order for Wednesday's contest in Philadelphia against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola. It's the lowest spot in the batting order that Bichette has hit since August of 2022. The 26-year-old All-Star is hitting just .189/.246/.268 on the year with a homer, 11 RBI, three stolen bases, nine walks and 22 strikeouts in 138 plate appearances over 33 games. Since April 24, Bichette has gone 3-for-40 (.075) with an RBI and eight strikeouts in 11 games. He's really in an early season funk right now and should be avoided in DFS lineups until he breaks out of it. With the move down the lineup for Bichette, outfielder Daulton Varsho is hitting in the two-hole for Toronto on Wednesday. Bichette is hitting .429 in seven career at-bats against Nola with a homer and two RBI, so perhaps he can get going in a tough matchup.Source: MLB.com

6 days agoHideki Matsuyama was a popular selection in his last Tour start at the Masters, but he disappointed fantasy managers with a T38 finish. There should be no hesitation to go right back to the well with the 32-year-old Japanese star this week. Matsuyama's recent form is one ofread more...
6 days agoRussell Henley will likely be a popular option for fantasy managers this week based on recent form, but it may be wise to proceed with caution at this year's Wells Fargo Championship. The 35-year-old tour veteran has three top-10 finishes in just 10 events in the 2024 calendar year, and generally projects as a safe, high-upside golfer with win equity. However, Henley doesn't appear to be a great course fit at Quail Hollow, which may explain his two missed cuts and a T72 in his last three starts here. His accuracy of the tee strength will be nullified for the most part, and over the last 24 rounds he ranks 62nd in driving distance, outside of the top-55 in approach play from 175+ yards, 54th in Poa putting, and 55th in strokes gained on long courses. All of these stats are traditionally a recipe for disaster at Quail Hollow, and fantasy managers choosing to roster Henley this week may be doing so at their own peril.Source: PGA Tour

6 days agoFantasy managers will have no problem checking the recent form box for Christiaan Bezuidenhout this week. The 29-year-old South African has finished inside of the top-30 in eight of his 11 PGA Tour starts in the 2024 calendar year, and he posted a T3 in his most recent start two weeks ago at the DP World Tour's ISPS Handa Championship. And while he may not fit the bomber narrative this week, he has fared well on long and difficult courses recently and he matches up well statistically with Quail Hollow. Over the last 24 rounds, he ranks as the sixth best adjusted course fit, 26th in weighted strokes gained on approach, 15th on approach from 200+ yards, 25th in weighted around-the-green play, sixth in Poa putting, and third in bogey avoidance. At a mere $7,600 salary on DraftKings, Bezuidenhout projects as a safe option with top-20 upside at the Wells Fargo Championship.Source: PGA Tour
6 days agoFantasy managers will face a tough decision on rostering Denny McCarthy at the Wells Fargo Championship. Quail Hollow notoriously demands excellence off-the-tee and places a premium on driving distance, both categories which are major weaknesses in the 31-year-old pro's game. However, McCarthy notably ranks 20th in the field in strokes gained on long courses, and he surprised many with his T8 finish here last year. With a low greens-in-regulation percentage expected this week, McCarthy should be able to lean on his elite short game to generate scoring opportunities and avoid big numbers, but his upside in a field of this caliber remains a question mark. Fantasy managers choosing to invest in McCarthy and his $7,300 price tag may want to consider taking the route of limited exposure this week.Source: PGA Tour
6 days agoJ.T. Poston will surely be on the radar of many fantasy managers this week. The eighth-year pro and current OWGR No. 40 followed up his impressive T30 finish at the Masters with a T5 at the RBC Heritage, marking his seventh top-10 finish in the 2023-2024 PGA Tour season. Statistically, Poston does not appear to be a great course fit at Quail Hollow, as he rates outside of the top-50 in weighted strokes gained off-the-tee, driving distance, weighted approach play, and strokes gained on long and difficult courses over the last 24 rounds. He also missed the cut in two of his last three starts here, while adding a T26 result in the 2021 rendition. Poston's tidy short game should be a huge benefit this week with a low greens-in-regulation percentage expected, and the recent upside is certainly worthy of roster consideration this week at a flat $7,000 DraftKings salary.Source: PGA Tour
6 days agoCarolina Hurricanes defenseman Brady Skjei continued his prolific playoffs with an assist in Tuesday's 4-3 double-overtime loss to the Rangers. He had the primary helper when Dmitry Orlov put Carolina 2-1 up in the first period. Despite the loss, Skjei finished the contest with an impressive plus-three rating and led the team with six hits. His stat line also included six shots on goal, two blocks, and four penalty minutes. With seven games played, Skjei hasn't yet scored in the 2024 playoffs, but he boasts six assists. Cale Makar (12), Evan Bouchard (9), and Victor Hedman (7) are the only blue-liners with more postseason points than him.Source: ESPN
6 days agoLos Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto picked up his fourth win of the season in Tuesday's 8-2 victory over the Marlins. The 25-year-old went eight innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs, but didn't walk a batter and struck out five. The two runs came off of a pair of solo home runs to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Bryan De La Cruz. The outing was his fourth straight quality start and he has shown impressive command thus far with an 8:47 BB:K through eight starts. With a 4-1 record, 2.79 ERA, and 1.00 WHIP, the righty is making a strong case for NL Rookie of the Year, and in his next start he'll face off with the Giants next Monday in San Francisco.Source: ESPN
6 days agoThe first domino in NASCAR's 2024 silly season has dropped, as Michael McDowell made the announcement on Wednesday that he will be leaving Front Row Motorsports at the conclusion of the 2024 season. McDowell has collected two wins thus far during his time with Front Row, the organization he has been with since the start of the 2018 season. It is speculated that McDowell could fill in a seat at Spire Motorsports next season, although nothing official has been announced.Source: Bob Pockrass
6 days agoCarolina Hurricanes left wing Jake Guentzel netted two goals against the Rangers in Tuesday's 4-3 double-overtime loss. The 29-year-old finally had some luck in front of the net after lightning the lamp only once through his first six postseason outings of the year. Despite the lack of goals, Guentzel has been in fine form in the playoffs, averaging a point per game through seven outings. He's averaging nearly 2.5 shots per game and should be able to boost his goal-scoring rate when the series continues in Raleigh.Source: ESPN
6 days agoNew York Rangers winger Alexis Lafreniere struck two goals in Tuesday's 4-3 double-overtime win against Carolina. He doubled the goals tally of his postseason career, opening the scoring with 10:53 played in the contest and notching his second 7:32 into the second frame. Lafreniere had yet to score in the 2024 postseason before Tuesday, but he has played a big part in the Rangers' success. With six games played, the 22-year-old has contributed seven points (two goals, five assists). Lafreniere can post a new career high with a four-game postseason scoring streak in Game 3 against the Hurricanes.Source: ESPN
6 days agoSan Francisco Giants starting pitcher Kyle Harrison threw seven scoreless innings in Tuesday's 5-0 victory over the Rockies, picking up his third win of the year. The southpaw allowed just four hits while walking two and striking out two. He now sports a 3.20 ERA (3.81 FIP), 1.22 WHIP, and a 15.1% K-BB% on the year through eight starts. Known for being more of a strikeout pitcher, his 40 strikeouts in 45 IP is somewhat disappointing, but other than that there isn't much to complain about. The 22-year-old is having a fine season so far for the Giants, and his next start tentatively lines up with the Reds next week at home. The Reds have a .208 batting average as a team against LHP, which is fifth-worst in the league.Source: ESPN
6 days agoDallas Stars forward Wyatt Johnston scored his fifth postseason goal of the year in Tuesday's 4-3 overtime loss to Colorado. The Stars got off to a dream start with three first-period goals, and Johnston squeezed his strike between efforts from Ryan Suter and Jamie Benn. It's his ninth career postseason goal, which puts Johnston tied with Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane, and Jesperi Kotkaniemi for the second most before age 21 among active players. The young Canadian is enjoying very good form at a pivotal stage of the season, averaging a point per game through eight playoff outings. Only Valeri Nichushkin (8) and Zach Hyman (7) have scored more goals than Johnston.Source: ESPN
6 days agoColorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon contributed a goal and assist as the team came from 3-0 down to defeat Dallas 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday. He had his helper when Valeri Nichushkin sparked the comeback with a power-play goal in the second period, and MacKinnon scored himself early in the third to tie the game at three. The Avalanche star now boasts four consecutive multi-point games in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He's managed 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in six games overall.Source: ESPN
6 days agoColorado Avalanche right wing Mikko Rantanen played his part in Tuesday's 4-3 comeback win over Dallas with two assists. The Avalanche found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the first period but still found a way to win in overtime. Rantanen collected even-strength assists on the team's second and third goals. It's his third multi-point effort in four games. The Finnish winger boasts 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in six games for the postseason. Only his teammate Cale Makar (12) and Edmonton's Connor McDavid (12) have scored more points.Source: ESPN
6 days agoCleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell produced a game-high 33 points on 12-for-25 shooting as the team had to settle for a 120-95 loss in Game 1 against Boston on Tuesday. He hit four shots from deep with 11 attempts and collected six rebounds, five assists, and one steal. The Cleveland star has now scored 122 across the past three games. Mitchell has been in spectacular form lately, but he definitely needs more help if the Cavaliers want to make Boston sweat in the series.Source: ESPN
6 days agoBoston Celtics guard/forward Jaylen Brown had the hot hand in Tuesday's Game 1 against the Cavaliers, leading his team with 32 points on 12-for-18 shooting in a 120-95 win. The three-time All-Star started a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and erupted for 15 first-quarter points. He finished 4-for-6 from downtown and completed his line with six rebounds, two assists, and one block. Brown has been shooting the ball very well in the postseason but has been a bit quiet so far, averaging 24.3 points. However, it looks like he's ready to hit top gear, with the stakes getting higher.Source: ESPN
6 days agoChicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger (ribs) went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres. Bellinger was activated from the injured list on Tuesday after missing the last two weeks with a fractured ribcage. The 28-year-old didn't miss a beat on his return, collecting three hits and blasting a solo shot off Randy Vasquez in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. Before landing on the injured list in mid-April, Bellinger was on an eight-game hitting streak entering Tuesday's contest. He extended his hitting streak to nine games and is slashing .382/.447/.794 with four home runs, eight RBI, and six runs during that span. Overall, Bellinger is slashing .250/.337/.489 with six home runs and 11 RBI across 101 plate appearances in 2024. Bellinger appears over his rib injury and should be started in all leagues.Source: MLB
6 days agoDallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford had an impressive opening to the second-round series against Oklahoma City on Tuesday, posting a double-double and swatting away five shots in a 117-95 loss. Dallas struggled throughout the contest, but Gafford enjoyed his best postseason outing of the year. He scored 16 points with 5-for-12 shooting from the field and a 6-for-8 record at the line and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. The Thunder lack size and have struggled on the glass all year, making this a very favorable matchup for Gafford, who has now scored in double figures in back-to-back games while bagging 17 rebounds.Source: ESPN
6 days agoDallas Mavericks point guard Luka Doncic had a tough time making an impact in Tuesday's Game 1 loss to Oklahoma City. He was limited to 19 points on 6-for-19 shooting, nailed only one of his eight attempts from three-point range, and even struggled at the line, going 6-for-10. Doncic's night of misery included five turnovers to go along with six rebounds, nine assists, and two steals. Lu Dort did a great job defensively against Doncic, but the Slovenian star also seemed to have been bothered by his sprained right knee, which has kept him on the injury report lately. It will be extremely difficult for Dallas to match the Thunder if Doncic isn't at full flow.Source: ESPN
