Clay Holmes Walks Tightrope For Fifth Save
12 months agoNew York Yankees relief pitcher Clay Holmes escaped trouble to snatch his fifth save of the season on Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed three base runners in the ninth inning, but pitched a scoreless frame to seal the deal for a 4-1 win. It's the 30-year-old's first save since April 12. Holmes entered 2023 as New York's favorite for saves after recording 20 of them last year and with Aroldis Chapman departed. The right-hander seemed to fortify his mantle as the Yankees stopper with four saves in April, but seven total New York arms have logged a save this season. Holmes is riding a quiet 9 1/3 scoreless-inning streak dating back to May 6.
