Game Notes for October 26th, 2016
Denver Nuggets 107, New Orleans Pelicans 1o2
- Of course I'm starting with this game. In 41 minutes of floor time, Anthony Davis dropped 50 points, joining only Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, and Michael Jordan to do so during a team's opening game. The Brow also added 16 rebounds, five assists, seven steals, four blocks, posting a crazy 99 points in daily fantasy. But, the Pelicans still lost. That can't happen. The one man show is the only player worth owning or drafting for fantasy at this point.
- Jusuf Nurik broke out for a healthy 23 points, shooting 69.2% on 13 attempts from the field, and nine rebounds. Will Barton added 22 points.
Miami Heat 108, Orlando Magic 96
- There's a new look in South Beach, and Hassan Whiteside is the poster boy. Miami's center wasted no time posting his first double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 14 boards. Get used to this type of production from Whiteside. He is the captain now. Oh, and keep an eye on Justise Winslow. Big things in store for last season's first round pick. Believe that.
- Serge Ibaka had an okay showing (14 points, seven rebounds) during his first night in an Orlando uniform, but despite the loss, get ready for a ton of double-doubles from this team. Ibaka, Nikola Vucevic (posted one last night), Aaron Gordon, Evan Fournier, and Elfrid Payton are all capable of flirting with a double-double each night. This is going to be a fun five to watch.
Dallas Mavericks 121, Indiana Pacers 130 OT
- The Pacers welcomed their new power forward, Thaddeus Young, to the squad. Despite fouling out, Young will be the team's all-purpose forward throughout the season. Myles Turner is the real story here, breaking out for 30 points, 16 rebounds (tying a career-high), four blocks, and hit a crucial three that ignited the Pacers' 8-0 run in overtime. The kid looked more than relaxed in his new starting role. Watch out.
- Deron Williams and Dirk Nowitzki continue to shoe away father time, both posting point totals in the 20's. They should be the team's top two contributors, even with the additions of Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut. Weird seeing some of these guys in new uniforms.
Brooklyn Nets 117, Boston Celtics 122
- Is this Isaiah Thomas' year? Well, he has already begun to put a case together, scoring 25, dishing nine, and grabbing five. Al Horford announced his arrival with four blocks. He's a guy I loved drafting against in daily fantasy last season, but held Brook Lopez to only seven points.
- They kept it close. Like last year, the Nets will be a tough out this season. Brooklyn's bench showed some life last night, getting solid contributions from Joe Harris, Justin Hamilton, and Sean Kilpatrick. Jeremy Lin had an impressive first showing on his second stint in New York. Can Linsanity become a brand on Atlantic Avenue as well? Also, keep an eye on Bojan Bogdanovic and his proclivity for firing behind the arc. The Nets as a whole attempted 44. Hmm.
Detroit Pistons 91, Toronto Raptors 109
- DeMar DeRozan did exactly what a shooting guard needs to do; score. DeRozan dropped 40 points, shot 63.0% on 27 attempts from the field, leading a Toronto unit. Although, not by much. Jonas Valanciunas posted 35 points and 11 boards. Keep an eye on the Lithuanian Wonder as he'll be among the elite centers of the league at season's end.
- I think it's already evident how bad this team needs Reggie Jackson to return.
Charlotte Hornets 107, Milwaukee Bucks 96
- The Hornets will also be a fun team to watch this season. Led by Kemba Walker and Nicolas Batum, one of the league's best backcourts, and a bench deep enough to mention, the Hornets will again make noise in the Eastern Conference. Keep an eye on Roy Hibbert, already looking a lot more comfortable in one game than he did in 81 played with the Lakers last season.
- This is another team I'll have my eye, mainly because of my patrioti, Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek Freak has arrived, again, this time at the one-spot, and put up 31 points. Greg Monroe didn't take the bench too well, out-producing starter Miles Plumlee big time. Let's see how long until Jason Kidd decides to shake things up.
Minnesota Timberwolves 98, Memphis Grizzlies 102
- Zach Randolph, not taking his demotion to the bench lightly, posted a double-double (19 points, 11 rebounds) in 24 minutes.
- If the Timberwolves continue to hold teams to around 100 points, hopefully less, they will be a winning squad. They have too much young talent not to be. Maybe the youth is the issue. They're still maturing.
Oklahoma City Thunder 103, Philadelphia 76ers 97
- Phew, the Thunder said. Phew. Well, Russell Westbrook wasted no time leading his Kevin Durant-less redemption tour, posting 32 points and 12 rebounds. He was also one assist shy of a triple-double; something everyone needs to get used to. No KD, no problem. Oh wait, the Sixers were 10-72 season. We'll see what happens when they play the Warriors. Victor Oladipo and Ersan Ilyasova both failed to impress in their debuts. Although, Oladipo will certainly benefit playing alongside Westbrook.
- Joel Embiid's debut was spoiled by the aforementioned Energizer Bunny. But Embiid impressed in only 22 minutes of court time, dropping 20 and grabbing seven boards. The Sixers will be a confusing squad all season. All but one player on the roster played Wednesday night. The 11 of 12 that did all saw over 10 minutes of the floor.
Sacramento Kings 113, Phoenix Suns 94
- It was a disappointing season debut for Boogie. And by disappointing I mean 24 points and six rebounds. Well, when you pay over $10,000 for DeMarcus Cousins in DraftKings, you tell me how you feel about that performance. Don't worry. He'll be a beast incarnate all season. Keep an eye on Ty Lawson while Darren Collison serves his suspension.
- A healthy Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight have been reunited. And? Let's just say it might be a long season for the Suns.
Houston Rockets 114, Los Angeles Lakers 120
- As predicted, this game was fun to watch. As predicted, a ton of guys went off for daily fantasy. The new-look Lakers impressed in Luke Walton's head coaching debut, showcasing a ton of young talent led by a solid showing from Jordan Clarkson. This team will certainly make some noise. Target them, and the Rockets often in daily fantasy. Also, this is Julius Randle's season to break out.
- James Harden did his thing, no surprise there. 34 points, 17 assists, seven turnovers. Like I said, no surprise there.
