Zack Wheeler Struggles, Nabs Cheap Win
10 months agoPhiladelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler threw five innings with six strikeouts during Saturday's 19-4 demolition of the Washington Nationals. The 33-year-old surrendered four runs on seven hits, but ran off with his seventh win of the campaign anyway. Wheeler was taken yard by former New York Mets teammate Dominic Smith during the second frame before a three-run fifth, which would ultimately be his last inning of the day. Wheeler launched just 85 pitches in this one; the right-hander perhaps could have worked the sixth had the Phillies not spotted him with 19 runs. The former All-Star shows an underwhelming 4.03 ERA, but promising 1.19 WHIP with 112 punchouts over 98 1/3 frames this year. Wheeler's next scheduled start comes on Friday against the Miami Marlins.
