Tarik Skubal 2024 Fantasy Baseball Outlook: Dominant Second Half Of 2023 Has Pushed ADP Into Overvalued Territory
11 months agoIn 2021, Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal had good strikeout numbers, but the walks were too high, leading to an uninspiring K-BB% of 18.5%. The former ninth-round pick also allowed the third-most HR (35) that year, resulting in a 4.34 ERA. The 2022 season showed signs of improvement but was cut short in August after needing flexor tendon surgery. The Detroit hurler returned in July of 2023 and was superb in his limited action. The southpaw had a 2.80 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and struck out 102 in 80.1 innings. Skubal increased his K-BB% to a sparkling 28.4% in 2023 and lowered his ERA, WHIP, OBA, HR/9, and BB/9 in the last two seasons. While all that points to a successful 2024 campaign, his NFBC ADP of 54 now sits 10 picks ahead of last year's NL Cy Young winner, Blake Snell, and his RotoBaller rank stands at 68, which puts him into overvalued territory. The young lefty's FGDC projection shows a 3.34 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 198 K in 171 IP, and a 21.5% K-BB%. For those bullish on his services, he does compete in the AL Central, which produced the least amount of runs in 2023, and he'll presumably face the Minnesota Twins multiple times – the team that struck out most last season. Skubal has the upside to be an ace and is an excellent No. 2 option for fantasy teams heading into upcoming drafts.
