Logan Gilbert 2024 Player Outlook: Control Artist Makes For Steady Presence In Fantasy Rotation
3 months agoSeattle Mariners starting pitcher Logan Gilbert does two things great: he doesn't walk batters and he gets great extension with his 6'6" frame. Gilbert was in the top five percent in walk percentage in 2023. His 4.7% was almost half of the MLB average of 8.4%. The extension Gilbert gets on his pitches was in the top one percent in MLB, coming in at 7.5 feet above the mound. This extension makes his 95 mph fastball look almost two mph faster and his offspeed pitches don't break at the same time an average extension would. The Stetson University product had an xERA of 3.69 in 2023, the lowest of his career. The one mark against Gilbert, however, is he gets hit too hard. His 90.5 exit velocity was in the bottom 12% of the league, while his hard-hit % was bottom 11%. The 1.08 WHIP from Gilbert is what kept his ERA and xERA down last season. If he's able to keep his underlying stats in check and rein in his home run total (29), he could look to make another jump in 2024. Firmly entrenched in the top 25, Gilbert could make a run for the top 15 of starting pitchers for fantasy this season.
