Kevin Gausman 2024 Player Outlook: Top Pitching Option Despite WHIP Concerns
12 months agoToronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman turned in yet another strong season in 2023. The 32-year-old made 31 starts, going 12-9 with a 3.16 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and a 31.1% strikeout rate in 185 innings pitched. Most of Gausman's peripherals were ace-like, but his WHIP was rather high for the second consecutive season. In terms of walks, his 7.2% walk rate was higher than his career mark of 6.6% but was not egregious. However, he did give up a lot of hard contact, which may have impacted his .321 BABIP. Gausman is currently being drafted at about pick 32 overall, making him the seventh starting pitcher off the board. Despite the relatively high WHIP, Gausman has proven to be a strong source of ERA and strikeouts while turning in a high number of innings. While wary fantasy managers may not want him to lead their staff, his high level of overall production and the lack of true top-tier pitching options make him a reasonable ace pick.
