Hunter Strickland (RP, SEA) - Week 12 Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues

OWNED IN: 23% of Leagues

ANALYSIS: Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Hunter Strickland has been on the injured list since late March with a Grade 2 right lat strain, but he appears to be nearing a return, possibly by the end of the month. The Mariners haven’t had much luck filling in Strickland’s closer role since he’s been gone. Anthony Swarzak got a shot, but was awful and then was traded to Atlanta. Roenis Elias then stepped in and he’s been serviceable, converting six of seven save opportunities, but his 3.94 ERA and 1.41 WHIP on the year certainly don’t encourage much confidence.

For his part, Strickland recorded saves in his first two attempts this season, then had a train wreck of an outing on March 29, after which he said he had tightness in his shoulder, leading to the long IL stint. For any category or rotisserie league where saves are scarce, now would be a good time to stash Strickland for his return as he’ll most likely jump right back into his closing role upon return. For points leagues and more shallow leagues, he’s less of a priority as the Mariners have been playing well under .500 ball since their hot start to the year.
