Ketel Marte 2021 Player Outlook: Strong Contact Hitter With Power Potential
4 years agoArizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was an absolute stud in 2019, slashing .329/.389/.592 with 32 home runs, 92 RBI, 97 runs and 10 stolen bases. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to replicate his 2019 power numbers in 2020. He had a slugging percentage of just .409 in 2020 and managed only two home runs over 45 games. Marte was one of the toughest players in the league to strikeout last year as his 10.8% strikeout rate ranked amongst the top 1% of the league. He hit .287 and tallied 14 doubles in 2020. It was just his power numbers that saw a massive drop-off. His barrel-rate lowered from 9.3% in 2019 to 3.7% last year and his home run to fly ball rate plummeted from 19.0% in 2019 to just 3.8% in 2020. Despite these alarming drop-offs, his hard-hit rate stayed about level from year to year. It was 40% in 2019 and 40.5% in 2020. The true Ketel Marte is likely somewhere in between his 2019 power outbreak and his 2020 power breakdown. Don't chase his 2019 numbers, but expect for him to bounce-back in 2021, providing a solid batting average right around .300 to go along with about 20 home runs. He did tweak his ankle earlier in Spring Training but only missed three games as a result. He's ready to roll for Opening Day and is a solid target at the fifth/sixth round turn of drafts, especially at the shallow 2B position.
