Franchy Cordero 2019 Outlook: Playing Time And Health Risks Mask Upside
6 years agoDespite just 154 plate appearance across 40 games last season, San Diego Padres outfielder Franchy Cordero made the Statcast leaderboard for the top-50 hardest-hit balls in 2018 three times. Before elbow surgery prematurely disrupted his campaign, Cordero’s raw-but-alluring talent was on full display. Cordero’s above-average .201 ISO allotted him seven dingers, which he paired with five stolen bags. He also managed a paltry .237 average and 0.25 BB/K. Entering 2019, Cordero’s development will be further obstructed with the Padres currently rostering six outfielders. With Wil Myers returning as an outfield staple, Cordero will vie for playing time with the other four young outfielders. While the Padres haven’t committed long term to Cordero, he’s impressed when given opportunities. From plate discipline to batted-ball quality, the 24-year-old improved in every notable offensive category. Had injury not cut his 2018 season short, Cordero could’ve breached 20 homers and 20 steals in a part-time role. Unfortunately, unless San Diego moves some outfield bodies, Cordero will likely return to a platoon role in 2019 with around 400 plate appearances. It’s possible he rises above his counterparts, lifting his ceiling exponentially. Or, he could struggle and be buried in the depth chart or become a trade piece himself, further clouding his outlook. With an ADP of 335, the fantasy market is fully acknowledging these risks. Cordero is going over 100 picks after his San Diego outfield mates. At the current price, Cordero is a worthwhile deep sleeper that provides 20/20 potential with the right breaks.
