Courtland Sutton 2019 Outlook: A New Number-One WR in Denver?
5 years agoDenver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton showed a great deal of promise in 2018, ranking fourth among NFL rookies with 704 receiving yards, and adding four touchdowns for good measure. Sutton also led all rookies, and ranked 19th among all NFL players, in receptions of 20 or more yards. That should come into play with Joe Flacco now at the helm in Denver, as Flacco has averaged just over 41 such completions per season throughout his 11-year career. We should also note the slight uptick in Sutton's targets once Emmanuel Sanders went down for the season in Denver's 12th game last year. Sutton averaged just under five targets per game through 12 weeks, but that number jumped up to 6.25 in his final four games. Sanders is expected to be in the fold from the get-go despite injuring his Achilles in the latter stages of the 2018 season, so it will be interesting to see who Flacco favors early on. One thing that's important to take into account is that it very well might be the veteran Sanders through a couple of games, but Sutton could reasonably be expected to overtake him as Flacco's preferred target as the schedule presses on. Sutton is much younger, and is not on the mend from a catastrophic injury. After a 42-catch, 704-yard 2018 season, Sutton offers a ton of upside at a mid-round draft price. His quarterback situation could be better, but if things break the right way, Sutton should draw weekly flex consideration.
