Brendan McKay Is A Two-Way Player
7 years agoTampa Bay Rays minor leaguer Brendan McKay was drafted in 2017 with the fourth overall pick in the MLB draft. He has been allowed to play first base, designated hitter and also started six games as a pitcher. His 36 games as a position player showed some talent as a hitter which did not translate into his statistics yet. The scouting says he has power potential and could become a major leaguer at first base. He was far more dominant as a pitcher but only had 20 innings on the mound, though he struck out 21 batters with a 1.80 ERA. The Rays have not decided yet whether to develop him as an everyday player or a pitcher. It is a long-shot that also defies how things are usually done, but if Shohei Ohtani sets the majors on fire from both roles in 2018, perhaps the Rays could consider seeing if he can do both.
