Tiered Dynasty Quarterback Rankings (Part 1)

What's up RotoBallers. Welcome to part one of our 2016 fantasy football tiered quarterback rankings for dynasty leagues. You can read the rest of our 2016 dynasty league rankings. Fantasy football covers multiple different types of leagues now. There are Standard Leagues, PPR Leagues, Half-PPR Leagues, Rookie Leagues, and arguably the most popular, Daily Fantasy Football. In this article, I, Justin Bales, will be taking you through my most recent Dynasty League Rankings.

Dynasty Leagues are one of the most difficult types of rankings to project. There are multiple aspects that need to be equally balanced while making the rankings. Each owner needs a mix of players that can produce this season along with players that have the potential to produce for years to come. These rankings take every aspect into consideration, as some younger players may be ranked higher than players that are ready to produce this season.

Editor's Note: Purchase a full season NFL Premium Pass (including Draft Kit + DFS Premium), and also get MLB Premium + DFS for free through October. Tier 1 – Dynasty Quarterback Rankings

  1. Cam Newton
  2. Andrew Luck
  3. Aaron Rodgers

This tier is pretty obvious. These three quarterbacks are the elite fantasy options, and should be for the next few years. Newton and Luck are younger than Rodgers, but quarterbacks generally play longer than other positions, so age doesn’t factor in quite as much here. Newton and Luck also have more rushing upside than Rodgers, which helps make them the two top options.

Rodgers is coming off a down year, but Jordy Nelson will be returning, and there’s very little reason to believe Rodgers won’t get back to his old self this season and for the future. He is an elite passer, and the Packers have an extremely potent offense. He is certainly a bit older, but that doesn’t matter all that much, as he should be able to play at an elite level for at least three or four more years.

Tier 2 – Dynasty Quarterback Rankings

  1. Russell Wilson
  2. Blake Bortles
  3. Jameis Winston
  4. Marcus Mariota

The quarterbacks in this tier all have a few things in common. First, they are all young, as Wilson is the oldest of the group at only 27 years old. Second, they all have great arms and have no problems beating teams in the pocket. Third, and potentially most importantly, they can all add fantasy points on the ground. That is a major part of this tier.

Wilson is coming off a great season, and he's only gotten better as his career has progressed. The Seahawks will likely continue to lean on him more and more, and he will continue to be a dominant fantasy asset for the next six or seven years, if not longer.

Bortles, Winston, and Mariota are all extremely young players with elite upside. They have a lot of growing to do in their careers, but they have all displayed a ton of potential early in their careers. These three players come with tremendous upside, but they don’t particularly come with much risk, which is why they made it so high in the rankings.

Tier 3 – Dynasty Quarterback Rankings

  1. Ben Roethlisberger
  2. Derek Carr
  3. Tom Brady
  4. Drew Brees

This tier is a little bit different than the first two. Aside from Carr, this is the first tier with "aging" quarterbacks. Obviously age needs to be taken into consideration during drafts for dynasty leagues, but quarterbacks tend to play longer than most positions, and these three players are proven commodities. They may retire soon, but they will give you elite seasons until that time comes.

Carr is the outlier in this tier, as he’s extremely young and not nearly as proven as the other players. With that being said, he’s in an up-and-coming offense and he’s continuing to get better. He’s a great prospect, and he comes with tremendous upside. He will have similar potential to the other quarterbacks in this tier at some point in his career, which is why he’s placed here.

Tier 4 – Dynasty Quarterback Rankings

  1. Eli Manning
  2. Tony Romo
  3. Kirk Cousins
  4. Andy Dalton
  5. Philip Rivers
  6. Carson Palmer

This tier is filled with older quarterbacks. None of them have the potential to be elite, but they all have the potential to be QB1s for at least this season. Manning, Romo, Rivers, and Palmer are all nearing the end of their careers, but as long as they are playing well, they could play for a few more years. These aren’t players to draft for the future, but they could help you win now.

Dalton and Cousins are a bit different than the other quarterbacks. Dalton is proven, but doesn’t have elite upside. He’s a solid quarterback, but nothing you should be content keeping. If Dalton is your starter, you should have a developmental piece behind him. Cousins is also a young quarterback, but he is much less proven. He’s coming off a huge season, but if he struggles this year he may have a tough time finding a new home. He has more upside than someone like Dalton, but he also comes with more risk.

Tier 5 – Dynasty Quarterback Rankings

  1. Matthew Stafford
  2. Ryan Tannehill
  3. Matt Ryan
  4. Tyrod Taylor
  5. Jay Cutler
  6. Carson Wentz
  7. Jared Goff

This is the first tier with rookie quarterbacks. Wentz and Goff have good upside, but they are both at least a year away from producing even decent fantasy numbers. They are the type of holds that you would use behind a starter like Dalton.

The rest of the tier is filled with quarterbacks that have talent, but always seem to disappoint a bit. They all have a few years left, but they are far from guaranteed players. These are serviceable starters for the year, but they won’t be QB1s, and they aren’t great options in dynasty leagues.

Tier 6 – Dynasty Quarterback Rankings

  1. Joe Flacco
  2. Alex Smith
  3. Teddy Bridgewater
  4. Paxton Lynch
  5. Brock Osweiler

This is a tier filled with quarterbacks that generally don’t take games in games with the exception of Flacco. He loves throwing deep, but is far from a great fantasy option. The other quarterbacks are in run heavy, dink and dunk offenses, which really limits their fantasy upside.

Lynch is another rookie with elite upside, but he’s this far down the list because of the risk he also comes with. He may not see the field this season, and he is a player that might need more than a year of playing the back up before he is ready to play. He’s a boom-or-bust risk this late in the draft.

Tier 7 – Dynasty Quarterback Rankings

  1. Ryan Fitzpatrick
  2. Robert Griffin
  3. Sam Bradford
  4. Jimmy Garoppolo
  5. Geno Smith
  6. Blaine Gabbert
  7. Mark Sanchez
  8. Colin Kaepernick
  9. Josh McCown

This tier is filled with players that may or may not lose their starting jobs throughout the season. Generally, younger players are better picks this late, but there are a couple guys that are projected to start in this tier, which could help your fantasy team this season.
