Day 2 Recap: MLB News and Notes for April 8th

Day two of the 2015 Major League Baseball season is in the books, with seven of Tuesday’s scheduled eight games played.

The game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago was postponed due to inclement weather. With Monday’s scheduled day off, the two teams will square off again after two days rest.

Take a look at some of the news, notes, highlights and numbers from Tuesday, April 7th. All of Wednesday’s matchups listed are EST.

April 7th Recap & Player Notes

  • The Atlanta Braves pounded the Miami Marlins 12-2 at Marlins Park in Miami. The Braves batted around in the first inning, scoring seven runs on six hits, three of those doubles. All seven runs came at the expense of Marlins starting pitcher, Mat Latos, who lasted only two-thirds of an inning. The Braves have scored 14 runs in their first two games this year and are 2-0. The final game of the series is at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday.
  • The state of Florida’s other team, the Tampa Bay Rays, didn’t fare much better, as the Rays fell to the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 after giving up six runs in the first two innings at home. For the second straight game, Orioles first baseman Steve Pearce hit a homerun. Wednesday’s capper at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg is at 7:10 p.m.
  • One day after putting up a day-high 10 runs Monday, the Colorado Rockies outlasted the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 at Miller Park in Milwaukee. Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun was not in Tuesday’s lineup, after running into the RF wall Monday. Wednesday’s game is scheduled for 8:10 p.m.
  • The defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants won their opener Monday, extending their Opening Day winning streak to seven games. However, their eight-game winning streak at the Arizona Diamondbacks ended with a 7-6 setback at Chase Field in Phoenix. Arizona scored three runs in third and fifth innings. The final matchup of the series is Wednesday at 9:40 p.m.
  • After snapping their 10-game Opening Day losing streak Monday, the Oakland Athletics fell at home to the Texas Rangers, 3-1. Sam Fuld of Oakland hit his second triple in as many days. Both teams are 1-1 heading into the series finale at 10:05 p.m. at O.co Coliseum in Oakland.
  • The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim evened the series at the Seattle Mariners with a 2-0 shutout at Safeco Field in Seattle. David Freese homered in the fourth inning, a two-run shot that also scored Albert Pujols for the game’s only runs. The series finale is set for 10:10 p.m. Wednesday.
  • After a lengthy rain delay that postponed the start Tuesday’s matchup between the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, the Padres broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth inning to win 7-3. The final matchup for the two teams is at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
  • After Tuesday’s scheduled day off or postponement due to weather, the following teams are scheduled for action Wednesday: Twins at Tigers (1:08 p.m.); Cardinals at Cubs (2:20 p.m.); Red Sox at Phillies (7 p.m.); Blue Jays at Yankees (7:05 p.m.); Mets at Nationals (7:05 p.m.); Pirates at Reds (7:10 p.m.); White Sox at Royals (8:10 p.m.); Indians at Astros (8:10 p.m.).
  • Teams combined for 104 hits Tuesday, bringing the total to 317 (hits on the season. Leading Tuesday’s games were the Braves (14).
  • There have been four one-run games this season. The Braves and the Orioles are each 1-0 in one-run games, which is best in the majors, while the Giants are 1-1.
  • Seven players hit their first home run Tuesday: Logan Forsythe (Rays); Kevin Kiermaier (Rays); Buster Posey (Giants); Brandon Crawford (Giants); David Peralta (Diamondbacks); Jake Lamb (Diamondbacks); David Freese (Angels). Steve Pearces (Orioles) and Adrian Gonzalez (Dodgers) each hit their second home run in as many games. A total of 34 players have hit at least one homeruns this season.
