BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues

OWNED IN: 23% of Yahoo Leagues

ANALYSIS: After posting a .283 batting average in 2016, there was little buzz around Kansas City Royals 2B Whit Merrifield, but that has changed during the last few weeks. Merrifield has a 1.201 OPS over the last 14 days, stealing three bases as well, and has a 17-game hitting streak that has made him a very viable fantasy option. The Royals have played Merrifield in both the oufield and second base, adding value to his fantasy profile and keeping him in the lineup nightly. Merrfield's six home runs in 2017 are already more than his two home runs in 81 games of 2016, his six stolen bases are approaching his eight from 2016, and his strikeout rate has dropped from 22% last season to 13% this season.

The Royals do not have the most potent offense, so Merrifield may not be able to get a boost in the way of runs and RBI, but he does profile as a high batting average hitter and the boost in extra-base hits is a nice addition to his profile. Merrifield also has a 1.075 OPS against left-handed pitchers, including four extra-base hits in 36 at-bats, making him a good DFS play in RvL matchups. He might not be a good option as a second baseman in more shallow leagues, but he is a good middle infield (MI) option in these formats, and should be played while he is on a hitting streak.
