BALLER MOVE: Add in All Leagues

OWNED IN: 54% of Yahoo Leagues

ANALYSIS: Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Sean Manaea is 3-3 on the year with a 4.35, but his 1.11 WHIP and 45 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings tell another story. Manaea's walk rate was 4.46 per nine coming into Friday's dominant start against the Yankees, showing that his low WHIP is particularly impressive. He has allowed only 13.5% line drives this season his hard hit ball percentage has dipped from 33.6% in 2016 to 32.4% this season. Fantasy owners also need to keep in mind that his ground ball percentage has rose to 53.8% this season. A sound strategy for those looking for pitchers to break out is acquiring pitchers with a high strikeout rate, high ground ball rate, and low hard hit ball rate; Manaea checks all of those boxes and that has made him valuable.

Control is the issue for Manaea and that has limited his ascent to the upper echleon of starting pitchers. Beyond that, with a solid strikeout rate and his ability to miss bats, Manaea looks like he could be a solid SP3 for the remainder of the season. Fantasy owners do need to monitor his walks, but if he continues to pitch like he did against the Yankees on Friday (seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts and only one walk), he should be a big part of lineups in even the deepest of leagues.
