3/16:Whenever Zack Wheeler takes the mound this spring, all eyes will be focused on him not necessarily for the overall quality of the outing, but instead out of how he looks after missing the last two seasons due to Tommy John surgery (and complications). While his first outing left more questions than answers, today’s attempt was a huge step in the right direction. Wheeler pitched 2 1/3 innings against the Nats on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out two. The big news here, though, was that Wheeler’s fastball hit 97 MPH multiple times and routinely sat between 92 and 95 MPH. For a guy who has suffered through the setbacks he has, that is an extremely encouraging sign he’s well on his way back to normal. Of course, whether or not Wheeler can fix the control issues that hampered his fantasy production during his only full Major League season is another question.--Andrew Bua - RotoBaller
