Yonny Chirinos 2020 Outlook: A Perfectly Fine but Boring Option
5 years agoYonny Chirinos was an unheralded minor league pitcher who broke out in 2017 with an excellent Triple-A season which earnt him a call-up to the Rays in 2018. Since his major league debut, Chirinos has put up solid numbers, with a 3.71 ERA over 223 innings pitched (IP). Chirinos has managed to do this while putting up below-average strikeout numbers (189 Ks in 233 IP). Given he had a 20.5 K% rate in his minor league career, his 21.0 K% major league strikeout rate is unlikely to improve much. Chirinos has managed to achieve his moderate success by minimizing walks. His 5.3 BB% last year was 18th best of all pitchers (minimum of 100 IP) which helped him to a 1.05 WHIP, good for 13th best. Chirinos predominately uses a sinker (55% usage) which ranks in the 88th percentile for horizontal movement, according to Statcast. Chirinos’ splitter was his best pitch in 2019 with an impressive .160 WOBA against it and it’s increased use of 22.5% (up from 13.8% in 2018) should help him maintain his success into 2020. The Rays’ use of an opener will help protect Chirinos too and their solid offense should help him better the nine wins from last year. Whilst he won’t win you any leagues, Chirinos is a solid pick with an ADP ~290 to complete the back end of your rotation in most any format.
