Yoenis Cespedes 2019 Outlook: Patience Required
6 years agoDon’t expect too much from Yoenis Cespedes in 2019. After his season ended abruptly last May, the return date for the Mets’ 33-year-old outfielder remains uncertain following double heel surgery. Having also played in just 119-games over the last two seasons, the latest we can expect to see Cespedes is right before the All-Star break - but don't go circling your calendar just yet. The Mets still consider Cespedes an everyday starter, a realistic expectation considering he smacked nine home runs in 141 at-bats last year. On the flip side, fantasy owners must question Cespedes’ mechanics as his body continues to break down. He’s completely undraftable in all formats until we have a little more info on his health, but if we're to look on the bright side, the good news is Cespedes continues to fight father time. He averaged a home run every five games in a shortened 2017 season, while his 89.9 MPH average exit velocity ranked 29th in the Majors. Being a superstar of the game, Cespedes can still the swing the bat hard. He's a great fastball hitter, and while you already know he's prone to a good whiff, don't forget Cespedes posted a career-low strikeout rate in 2017. With two seasons inside the Top-10 in extra-base hits, runs scored, as well as RBI (2014, 15), Cespedes is the top name to watch on waivers around the midseason mark once the doc gives him the all-clear.
