Todd Gurley 2019 Player Outlook: Large Clouds of Uncertainty Surrounding an Elite Talent
6 years agoUp until December 2018, Todd Gurley was the consensus #1 overall pick for 2019. In December and January, the train went completely off the rails. Now we enter 2019 unsure of what to do. A healthy Gurley is one of, if not the best running back in fantasy football. However, everything out of Los Angeles suggests Gurley is not healthy. We know Gurley has an arthritic knee. We know that in terms of real football, running backs have very little impact on the outcome of games. We saw C.J. Anderson put up better numbers than Gurley over the latter part of the season and the playoffs. We saw the Rams place a second round tender on Malcolm Brown and match the Lions' offer to keep him. We also saw the Rams trade up to spend a day two pick on Darrell Henderson. We've heard the reports that the Rams want to scale back Gurley's workload. Even with reduced usage, Gurley is a mid to low RB1, at worst. I would not take Gurley over safer players with equally high ceilings, but there comes a point where one of the best RBs in fantasy becomes worth it. As the season nears, hopefully we will learn more about Gurley's knee and have a better idea of how to handle him. For now, consider Gurley no sooner than late first round and if you want to pass on him and let someone else deal with it, I won't fault you.
