Terry McLaurin 2020 Outlook: A Fine WR3 Or Flex Option
5 years agoWashington Redskins wide receiver Terry McLaurin proved in 2019 that he's capable of overcoming poor quarterback play and an all-around unfavorable surrounding environment to put up numbers in fantasy football. That's the good news. The bad news is that his QB situation still looks frightening on paper heading into 2020, with Dwayne Haskins presumably in line to start Week 1. It's never fun to bank solely on a wide receiver's individual ability for fantasy purposes. At some point, there needs to be a level of faith in the guy throwing him the ball or, at the very least, the offense's inclination to effectively make him a focal point. On that note, volume worked heavily in McLaurin's favor in his rookie year, as he was the only Redskins player to see more than 58 targets (he saw 93). With the dearth of talent elsewhere on Washington's offensive depth chart, there's no reason to think McLaurin's target share will decrease in 2020. On the matter of how new head coach Ron Rivera will influence McLaurin's fantasy value, it's worth noting that 2019 was the only time in Rivera's tenure with Carolina that the Panthers ranked higher than 15th in total pass attempts. This outlier was due mostly to the fact that running back Christian McCaffrey is a capable pass-catcher, and that the Panthers Defense gave up the second-most points per game in the NFL. Five of Rivera's Carolina squads ranked inside the top 10 in total rush attempts, and only one of those instances occurred with McCaffrey on the roster. In other words, look for Rivera to employ a relatively run-centric approach on offense as long as the Redskins Defense permits it. McLaurin's ADP is that of a high-end WR3 or flex option, which sounds about right considering the external factors. Improved QB play and a balanced offensive philosophy will determine whether he exceeds that threshold or not.
