Taysom Hill 2023 NFL Player Outlook: Usage Uncertain After Offseason Signings
1 year agoNew Orleans Saints tight end Taysom Hill continued his role as a Swiss Army knife in 2022, despite preseason comments from head coach Dennis Allen suggesting that Hill's time as a quarterback had ended. The triple-threat playmaker finished the year with 77 yards receiving and two touchdowns on nine catches, 575 yards rushing with seven touchdowns, and 240 yards passing with two touchdowns. Most of Hill's rushing success came from designed quarterback runs out of the shotgun. Out of 96 rushing attempts, 94 were from the shotgun, and 82 were non-RPO plays. Those types of opportunities may be drying up in New Orleans following the signing of former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr to a four-year, $150 million contract. New Orleans also re-signed Jameis Winston to back up Carr. Allen and offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael may find it less enticing to line up Hill in the Wildcat with Carr on the field than they did in 2022 when their other options were Winston and Andy Dalton. Hill is clearly still a big-play threat, and the Saints will continue to look for ways to get him involved, but they may need to get even more creative. In a recent press conference, Hill expressed hope that he would be used as a pass-catching tight end more often this year, but he does face more competition for snaps there as well, with recently signed Foster Moreau joining Juwan Johnson on the depth chart. Already an extremely volatile, touchdown-dependent option, Hill is better left off of draft boards in most leagues, at least until his role becomes more apparent.
