Taysom Hill 2021 Outlook: Likely Will Get A Chance Eventually
3 years agoI'm nowhere near as convinced as the general public and sports media are that Jameis Winston is getting Week 1 nod. When Drew Brees went down last season, it was Taysom Hill who got the start ahead of Winston. Why would that change this year? Be that as it may, for now, I guess we should assume it will be Winston. Regardless of who gets the start in Week 1, that guy will be a QB1 in fantasy. If it's Winston, then Hill becomes undraftable outside of Superflex formats. Even though Hill will get on the field in his usual gadget role, he obviously won't be a viable start at quarterback. Whether it's Week 1 or later in the season, Hill will likely get his chance due to Winston's penchant for throwing the ball to the other team. Whenever that moment occurs, Hill will be worth an immediate pick-up and start in fantasy. Last season, during Hill's four starts, he averaged 21.6 ppg. He scored between 18.5 and 24.4 fantasy points in every game. His rushing ability and nose for the end zone gives him a tremendously high floor. If we knew for certain that Hill was going to start, he would be ranked somewhere in the QB9-12 range. That is how you should value him the moment you find out he's the Saints' starting quarterback.
8/30 Update: Well, Winston was named the starter after an impressive performance in the second preseason game. Hill should not be drafted outside of deep Superflex leagues, but when Winston inevitably gets benched, Hill becomes an immediate waiver wire option.
