Taylor Gabriel 2019 Outlook: Regression Coming After Career Season
6 years agoChicago Bears wide receiver Taylor Gabriel will head into the 2019 season coming off the best season of his pro career. Gabriel set career-highs with 67 receptions, 688 yards and two touchdowns as the Bears surprised many to win the NFC North. Gabriel became quarterback Mitch Trubisky's safety valve early and often during the first half of the season, averaging 5.4 receptions through the first five games of the season. But after posting back-to-back 100-yard games, Gabriel averaged only 3.63 receptions over his final 11 games of the season. The 28-year-old will enter the season expected to be a contributor on offense but the team has added pieces that could depress his numbers. Gabriel has speed but lacks the size to win 50/50 balls and is ineffective in the red zone. His role on the team is best suited as a speedster that can do damage running the occasional deep route or picking up a first down on end-around plays. From a fantasy perspective, however, Gabriel barely moves the needle. He will be, no more, than a WR4/5 this season and should hit the waiver wire to begin 2019.
