7/16:Sunday’s New York Mets-Colorado Rockies game may still be ongoing, but Amazins’ starting pitcher Steven Matz is not. The southpaw was destroyed to the tune of seven earned runs over one inning pitched, allowing nine hits (including a bomb to Nolan Arenado) and a walk while striking out two. Over Matz’s first six starts since returning on June 10, he turned in four quality starts. However, in his last start prior to the All-Star Break against the St. Louis Cardinals, he allowed five earned runs over 4 1/3 innings pitched and now put up an even bigger dud. He saw his ERA rise from 3.05 to 4.58 over the course of a single inning – ouch. As we’ve all been told many times, Matz has all the talent in the world but has yet to put it completely together and/or stay healthy in the Majors. Don’t panic here just yet – Matz has a nice matchup at home on Friday against the Athletics. If he turns in his third straight disaster, then it might be time to worry.--Andrew Bua - RotoBaller
