Sammy Watkins 2019 Outlook: Trick or Treat
6 years agoSammy Watkins may be the trickiest player to project this season. Depending on surrounding circumstances he could finish anywhere from WR10 to WR75. Health, as always, will be a key factor in his production. However, this season we also have the added story of Tyrek Hill.
If Hill is out for the entire season, then Watkins could finish as a top-10 wide receiver, as the number one for Patrick Mahomes. On the other hand, if Hill is there come Week 1, Watkins could fall into the range of WR30. As long as he stays healthy this should be his range, but just last season, he only played in 10 games and durability is not his strong suit.
After trading up from nine to four to draft him the Bills thought he would be their savior at the position. It didn’t happen and he was traded away to the Rams for a season. Now in his second season in Kansas City, it will be up to him to prove he is worth the hype which still surrounds him entering only his age 26 season.
Playing in 10 games for the Chiefs in 2018, Watkins caught 40 receptions for 519 yards and three touchdowns. While this does not seem too impressive in most of, if not all of these games he was hampered by his nagging foot injuries which seem to constantly creep up. If they do so again this season, it may be his last in Kansas City and who knows where he will go from here. Maybe Miami?
With Hill out, he could finish with 95 receptions for 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns. If Hill is there the whole season these numbers could be closer to 70 for 900 and five. And these are only if he stays healthy. However, we cannot be scared and draft with injuries in mind. We also have to, at this time assume Hill will at least miss eight games. This in itself makes Watkins a great pick in the fourth or fifth round of fantasy drafts. Even if you only get eight games of WR1 production, it will be elite production. With Mahomes throwing him the ball how can it not be? If somehow, we find out for certain Tyrek Hill will be there all season, Watkins immediately falls to the sixth or seventh round but is still a solid pick at this range.
Don’t be afraid of Watkins because of his health history. When he is healthy, he is a top-20 WR in the NFL, so to get him in the fourth round or the seventh round is a steal. Therefore, take a chance, he might pleasantly surprise you.
