Peyton Barber 2019 Player Outlook: The Least-Exciting Starting Tailback In The NFL
6 years agoBarber was one of the most uninspiring starting running backs to own in fantasy football in 2018, and he may be again in 2019. He was Tampa’s top tailback last year not because he was a scintillating speedster or a dynamic pass catcher. The Buccaneers simply did not have a better option, and Barber was the best of a mediocre backfield bunch. The great news for Barber and his fantasy owners is that Tampa Bay shockingly decided against upgrading the running back position this offseason (Andre Ellington?), so the only runner standing in Barber’s way of starting again is 2018 second-round pick Ronald Jones, whose rookie season was a gigantic hodgepodge of injuries, ineffectiveness and off-the-field issues. If Jones does not straighten out his act, Barber will have the luxury of being the bellcow back in new head coach Bruce Arians’ offense, and just ask Arizona’s David Johnson how wonderful of a role that can be. Barber is a plodder (3.7 YPC, no plays over 30 yards in 2018) who does not add much in the passing game (92 receiving yards last year), yet he will be valuable in fantasy leagues because he could have 200-250 touches in what he could be a much-improved offense. It all depends on whether or not the more-talented Jones develops into a contributor or continues to be a bust.
