Chas McCormick Activated from 10-Day Injured List
Chas McCormick (oblique) was activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday. In a corresponding move, the Astros optioned outfielder Kenedy Corona to Triple-A Sugar Land. McCormick was held out of action since late May. He made six appearances in the minor leagues during his rehab stint and held a .174/.240/.435 line with two long balls. Before his injury, McCormick held a modest .256/.347/.302 slash line with two doubles and two RBI through 36 games in Houston. The 30-year-old also struggled during the 2024 campaign, posting a .577 OPS with just five home runs. However, he did show some upside in 2023, with a .273/.353/.489 line, 22 home runs, and 19 stolen bases. Fantasy managers should expect McCormick to operate as a depth piece in the outfield and carry minimal fantasy value.Source: Brian McTaggart
Houston Astros outfielder Luis Gil Throws 57 Pitches in Latest Rehab Outing
Luis Gil (lat) completed 57 pitches in his latest rehab outing with Double-A Somerset on Friday evening. In this outing, Gil was able to log 3 1/3 innings of two-run ball. He allowed two hits, two walks, and struck out seven. In his first rehab outing, Gil also tossed 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball with six punchouts. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he appears to be nearing the end of his rehab stint. He will likely need to make one appearance with Triple-A and increase his pitch count once again before being activated off the 60-day IL. The 27-year-old has been sidelined with a high-grade lat strain through the entire first half. Last season, Gil was effective on the bump, holding a 3.50 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP. He is worth stashing ahead of his activation in all standard leagues.Source: Bryan Hoch
New York Yankees right-handed pitcher Jaroslav Halak Officially Announces Retirement
Source: ESPN
Goaltender Jaroslav Halak hasn't played in the NHL since the 2022-23 season, but he has only now made his retirement official. Halak began his career with the Montreal Canadiens in 2006-07 and played for seven teams over 17 seasons. He made 581 regular-season appearances, posting a 295-189-69 record, along with a 2.50 goals-against average, a .915 save percentage, and 53 shutouts. In 2014-15, Halak was an All-Star and set a New York Islanders franchise record with 38 wins. He is a two-time winner of the William M. Jennings Trophy, which is awarded to the best goaltending duo in a single season.Zebby Matthews Reinstated, Starting on Saturday
Zebby Matthews (shoulder) is slated to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list and start Saturday's contest against the Colorado Rockies. The right-hander has been held out of action since June due to a right shoulder strain. However, Matthews needed just one rehab start with Triple-A St. Paul to prove he was ready to return to the big leagues. In this outing, the Western Carolina product struck out an impressive nine hitters across four shutout innings against the potent Iowa Cubs. Earlier in the season, Matthews flashed high strikeout upside in Minnesota (30.1% K rate) but held a modest 5.21 ERA. Given his high strikeout potential, he is worth adding in all standard leagues ahead of his start on Saturday. He is also a top streaming option facing the Rockies.Source: Dan Hayes
Minnesota Twins right-handed pitcher Drew Helleson Inks Two-Year Extension with Ducks
Source: TSN
Anaheim Ducks defenseman Drew Helleson has landed a two-year, $2.2 million contract extension. The 24-year-old completed his entry-level contract with the 2024-25 campaign and was a restricted free agent who had filed for salary arbitration. Through his first 59 career games, Helleson has recorded 14 points (five goals, nine assists), 67 shots, 76 blocks, and 101 hits with a plus-six rating. Last season, Helleson led all rookie defensemen in shorthanded time on ice (54:32) and was second to Lane Hutson in both points and assists among first-year rearguards. Helleson has upside in his games but currently doesn't have much fantasy value because he's limited to third-pairing minutes in the Anaheim defense.Gabriel Vilardi Signs Six-Year, $45 Million Extension
Source: ESPN
Winnipeg Jets forward Gabriel Vilardi has inked a six-year, $45 million contract extension. The Kingston, Ontario native is receiving a huge pay increase after previously being on a two-year, $6.88 million deal. Vilardi has fully earned it, as the 25-year-old has notched 97 points (27 goals, 34 assists) in 118 contests since arriving in Winnipeg in 2023. During the 2024-25 season, Vilardi was Winnipeg's third-highest goal-scorer with 27 markers and had 61 points in 71 games. He will continue to be a regular on the top line and the power play next season.Hunter Brown to Start Sunday, Framber Valdez Pushed Back
Hunter Brown instead of lefty Framber Valdez for the series finale, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Valdez was listed as the starter for Sunday when pitching probables came out Thursday. However, Astros manager Joe Espada said the team was always planning on starting Brown to give Valdez extra rest. The 31-year-old standout will toe the rubber early next week in a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.Source: Brian McTaggart - MLB.com
The Houston Astros have made a notable change to their rotation for Sunday's game against the Seattle Mariners. They'll start All-Star right-hander Carlos Estevez Gives Up Walk-Off Homer in Loss
Carlos Estevez (4-3) blew a save and took the loss in an 8-7 heartbreaker against the Miami Marlins on Friday. After the Royals took a 7-5 lead in the top of the 10th inning, Estevez was unable to close the door on the Marlins in a costly defeat. Estevez retired the first hitter he faced, but the right-hander allowed the automatic runner to score on an Agustin Ramirez RBI single and then surrendered a walk-off homer to All-Star Kyle Stowers. The 32-year-old now has six blown saves, three of which have come over his past four appearances, and has yielded five earned runs in 7 2/3 innings this month. While Estevez still has 25 saves and a 2.76 ERA over 42 1/3 frames, his underwhelming 35:15 K:BB isn't befitting of a lights-out closer. He may end the season in a setup role if the Royals deal him before the July 31 trade deadline.Source: ESPN
Kansas City Royals closer Bryce Miller to Throw Live Batting Practice Saturday
Bryce Miller (elbow) is expected to throw live batting practice on Saturday, according to Tim Booth of the Seattle Times. Miller previously threw a bullpen session this past Tuesday as he works back from elbow inflammation. The 26-year-old has gone on the 15-day injured list twice this season because of elbow troubles and hasn't pitched in the majors since June 6. With poor elbow health weighing him down, Miller has been unable to build on what looked like a breakthrough 2024 campaign. He has managed just 48 2/3 innings across 10 starts and pitched to a bloated 5.73 ERA with a 1.54 WHIP, 39 strikeouts, and 23 walks.Source: Tim Booth - Seattle Times
Seattle Mariners right-hander Kyle Stowers Blasts Walk-Off in Two-Homer Game
Kyle Stowers continued his stunning breakout campaign in an 8-7 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday. The first-time All-Star smashed a pair of two-run homers, including a walk-off in the 10th inning, to highlight a 3-for-5, five-RBI night. Remarkably, Stowers has gone 8-for-10 with five HRs, 11 RBI, and six runs scored in his past two games. He's up to eight dingers in 13 contests this month, giving him 21 on the season. The 27-year-old is also slashing a superb .298/.371/.563 with 59 RBI and 48 runs over 351 plate appearances. With Stowers ranking in the league's top 6% of hitters in xwOBA, xSLG, barrel rate, and hard-hit percentage, he doesn't look like someone who's going to fade down the stretch.Source: ESPN
Miami Marlins outfielder Mike Trout Doing Outfield Drills
Mike Trout did some outfield drills on Friday and offered a positive update afterward, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. "It went good," the 33-year-old said. "Just like a slow progression to get my feet under me, and then hopefully be back in the outfield soon." Trout expects to get more work in right field on Saturday, though it's unclear when he'll be ready to return as a defender in game action. The 11-time All-Star missed almost all of May with a bone bruise in his left knee and has been a full-time DH since he returned May 30. While Trout is no longer the all-around superstar he was during his halcyon days, the three-time AL MVP has continued to hit well this year. After going 2-for-5 in a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday, Trout is slashing .241/.365/.474 with 17 homers, 42 RBI, and 37 runs scored in 304 plate appearances.Source: Jeff Fletcher - Orange County Register
Los Angeles Angels designated hitter/outfielder Spencer Arrighetti Nearing Rehab Assignment
Spencer Arrighetti (thumb) is scheduled to report to Double-A Corpus Christi this week. He should start a rehab assignment in the coming days. Arrighetti threw a 35-pitch live batting practice session last Sunday and hasn't dealt with any issues since then. The Astros are targeting an August return for Arrighetti, who has been on the IL since April 7 with a broken right thumb. The 25-year-old made two starts before then - one a gem, the other a dud - and yielded six earned runs on four hits with 8:5 K:BB in 9 2/3 innings. As a rookie in 2024, Arrighetti pitched to a 4.53 ERA with an impressive 171 strikeouts in 145 frames. After a strong second half last season, Arrighetti entered this year as a potential breakout candidate and may be worth stashing as he draws closer to a return.Source: Matt Kawahara - Houston Chronicle
The Houston Astros announced Friday that right-hander Aaron Nola to Throw Live Batting Practice Saturday
Aaron Nola (ankle, rib) will throw a live batting practice session consisting of two innings and 35 pitches on Saturday, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The plan after that is for Nola to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday before potentially embarking on a rehab assignment. The 32-year-old landed on the 15-day injured list with a sprained right ankle in mid-May, but he eventually had to move to the 60-day IL as a result of a stress fracture in his right rib. Nola got off to an uncharacteristically terrible start before then, as he went 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA (5.05 xERA) in 49 2/3 innings. He's likely still a few weeks away from returning to the bigs.Source: Scott Lauber
Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Cristian Javier Solid in Rehab Start
Cristian Javier (elbow) pitched well over three innings in his first Double-A rehab start on Friday. Javier totaled 46 pitches and allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts against two walks. It was the second rehab outing for Javier, who tossed 35 pitches in a July 12 start in the rookie-level Florida Complex League. The 28-year-old hasn't taken a major league mound since he underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2024. Javier proved effective before then, recording a 3.59 ERA in 501 innings. The Astros remain hopeful that he'll return sometime in August.Source: Jeremy Branham - ESPN 97.5 Houston
Houston Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy Throws Bullpen Session on Friday
Jose Urquidy (elbow) completed a successful bullpen session on Friday. The right-hander continues to throw without any issues, but hasn't faced live hitters yet. Urquidy is working his way back from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in June of last year. There is still more work to do, but Urquidy could be an option for the Tigers by mid-August. There is unlikely going to be fantasy value here.Source: Evan Petzold
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Alex Lange Scheduled to Pitch on Saturday
Alex Lange (lat) is scheduled to pitch for Triple-A Toledo on Saturday. The right-hander continues to work his way back from a lat strain that has kept him sidelined since July 8. Lange only pitched in seven games before being pulled off his rehab assignment due to a lat issue. He hasn't made his 2025 season debut, but figures to be in the mix soon. The hope is that Lange can be a high-leverage option for the Tigers, but isn't someone worth stashing in fantasy formats.Source: Evan Petzold
Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long has Ugly Rehab Outing
Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) made another rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Friday. Gipson-Long was fantastic with 4 2/3 scoreless innings during his first rehab start. Sadly, he wasn't able to have the same success on Friday. He tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out four batters. Gipson-Long was blasted during this outing, but the main focus is him getting healthy. He continues to work his way back from a neck injury that has sidelined him since late June. He figures to return to Detroit soon, but it's unclear if he'll reclaim his fifth spot in the rotation. That being said, Gipson-Long isn't someone that needs to be rostered in fantasy formats right now.Source: Evan Petzold
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Brendan Rodgers Exits Early on Friday
Brendan Rodgers (oblique, head) was forced to make an early exit from Friday's rehab game at Triple-A Sugar Land. Rodgers collided with his teammate and suffered a head injury during the third inning of this contest. He was pulled out of the contest and is expected to be examined for a concussion. It's unclear how long he'll be out, but for now he should be considered day-to-day. This was Rodgers first rehab game while he attempts to return from an oblique injury. He was struggling with the bat before the injury and doesn't need to be rostered in fantasy formats.Source: Chandler Rome
Houston Astros infielder Dylan Crews Nearing Rehab Assignment
Dylan Crews (oblique) is nearing a rehab assignment, according to interim manager Miguel Cairo. This is good news considering Crews has been sidelined since mid-May due to a left oblique strain. The fact he has missed nearly two months of action means he'll probably have a long rehab stint. Barring any setbacks, Crews should be back in the mix by early August. He was struggling with the bat before going down and isn't someone that must be rostered right now. He's slashing .196/.266/.354 with seven home runs, 15 RBI, and 11 stolen bases in 45 games. He does have good potential, so fantasy managers can be hopeful those numbers improve.Source: Mark Zuckerman
Washington Nationals outfielder Thairo Estrada Placed on Injured List
Thairo Estrada (thumb) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday. Estrada has been dealing with a thumb issue since he jammed it back on July 7. He'll now head to the shelf, but backdated to July 11. That means, Estrada could potentially return to the lineup following this weekend's series against the Minnesota Twins. In a corresponding move, shortstop Ezequiel Tovar (oblique) has been activated off the injured list and is playing on Friday. Estrada hasn't done enough with the bat to warrant rostering in most fantasy formats.Source: Rockies Club Information
Colorado Rockies infielder Sal Frelick Lands on Injured List
Sal Frelick (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday. Frelick suffered a hamstring injury while making a sliding catch during the final game before the All-Star break. The Brewers gave him a few days to rest and see how he feels. It doesn't sound like Frelick is doing much better, so he'll start the second half of the season on the shelf. In a corresponding move, outfielder Blake Perkins has been recalled to take the spot on the active roster. He figures to serve as a replacement in right field. It's unclear how long Frelick will be sidelined, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect him back until probably August.Source: Curt Hogg
Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Nolan Gorman Scratched on Friday
Nolan Gorman (back) was scratched from the starting lineup for Friday's series opener against the hosting Arizona Diamondbacks to begin the second half of the season. The Cardinals didn't give a specific reason for why Gorman was scratched, but he had been dealing with a back issue going into this week's All-Star break. With the 25-year-old starting on the bench, Brendan Donovan will take over at the keystone and will hit leadoff, with Jordan Walker entering the game in right field and batting seventh against D-backs right-hander Brandon Pfaadt. Gorman, a former first-rounder, continues to be inconsistent with the bat for the Cards, as he enters the second half hitting just .219 (43-for-196) with nine home runs, 29 RBI and 31 runs. Donovan was an All-Star this year and has hit .571 with an RBI in seven career at-bats versus Pfaadt.Source: MLB.com
St. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Arenado Ready for Second Half
Nolan Arenado (finger) is back in the starting lineup to kick off the second half of the season in Friday's series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks and right-hander Brandon Pfaadt at Chase Field, starting at third base and batting fifth. Arenado is returning after missing the final two games of the first half of the year with a sprained right index finger. The 34-year-old eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner remains St. Louis' starting third baseman, but he's no longer in the prime of his career and continues to see a drop in his power numbers. Through 84 games in the first half in his fifth year with the Red Birds, Arenado slashed a mediocre .246/.305/.388 with a career-worst .693 OPS, 10 home runs, 42 RBI and 39 runs scored in 347 plate appearances. He has hit .286 with a homer and three RBI in seven career at-bats against Pfaadt.Source: MLB.com
St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Eugenio Suarez Back in Action to Begin Second Half
Eugenio Suarez (hand) is starting at third base and is batting fifth in Friday's series opener against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Andre Pallante to start the second half of the season. Suarez wore a pitch off his left hand during the All-Star game on Tuesday, but thankfully X-rays came back negative and the 34-year-old slugger will be available to fantasy managers to begin the second half of the season. Although the Venezuelan infielder swings and misses frequently and has his fair share of strikeouts, he's having one of the best years of his career after clubbing 31 home runs and driving in a league-high 78 runs for the Snakes in 95 games in the first half. On an expiring contract and with the D-backs expected to be sellers at this year's trade deadline, Suarez could be wearing a different uniform by July 31.Source: MLB.com

Kerry Carpenter Running, Hitting, Fielding as he Rehabs
Kerry Carpenter (hamstring) is completing a return to play running progression and is also hitting a completing defensive drills on a daily basis, according to the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. Carpenter was eligible to come off the 10-day injured list last Friday, but he's still rehabbing and was not activated prior to the start of the second half of the season on Friday, July 18. The 27-year-old landed on the IL back on July 2 with a right-hamstring strain. Fantasy managers should keep him stashed everywhere, as Carpenter will be a lineup regular when he returns to the big-league roster. The former 19th-round selection in 2019 is four home runs shy of tying his career high of 20 that he set in 2023 and is also slashing .257/.285/.494 with a career-low .780 OPS, 32 RBI and 40 runs scored in 78 games this year.Source: Detroit Free Press - Evan Petzold
Detroit Tigers outfielder Max Kranick to Have Tommy John Surgery
Max Kranick (elbow) will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Kranick received a second opinion after being diagnosed with a right flexor strain in late June and will now have elbow reconstruction that could keep him sidelined until 2027. It's a really tough break for the 27-year-old, who will be having TJ surgery for the second time in the last three years. The former 11th-round pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates back in 2016 out of a high school in Pennsylvania made 24 appearances out of the bullpen for the Mets earlier this year before being shut down, posting a 3.65 ERA (3.89 FIP) and 1.05 WHIP with 25 strikeouts and only five walks in 37 innings in his first year in Queens.Source: MLB.com - Anthony DiComo
New York Mets right-hander Starling Marte Nearing Return, But Rehab Delayed
Starling Marte (knee) is progressing toward a return from the injured list, but his bruised right knee is healing slower than expected. Although eligible to return Friday, he will need more time before rejoining the club. The 36-year-old has quietly posted a solid .353 OBP this season, though his four homers and five steals leave much to be desired. While not a game-changer, Marte's on-base ability makes him a viable bench stash in deeper fantasy leagues. Fantasy managers should monitor his status and prepare for a return in the coming weeks.Source: Anthony DiComo
New York Mets outfielder Jesse Winker Receives Epidural, Remains Sidelined
Jesse Winker (back) received an epidural and will be shut down for at least another week. Winker was placed on the IL on July 11 and has appeared in 26 games this season, slashing .229/.309/.400 with one home run. He had missed over two months due to a right oblique strain before briefly returning on July 8. With durability concerns mounting and little production when active, fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach. Until Winker can stay healthy and contribute, he's not worth a roster spot in most formats.Source: Anthony DiComo
