Toronto Blue Jays right-hander
Max Scherzer (back, thumb) experienced some back tightness after his last bullpen session and didn't end up throwing on Tuesday in Toronto, according to The Athletic's Mitch Bannon. Scherzer's timeline has changed a bit as a result, but the team is hoping he can throw again this week. The 40-year-old three-time Cy Young winner made just one start with Toronto earlier this year before landing on the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in his troublesome right thumb. He has had multiple setbacks since and is now dealing with a back ailment that has complicated his recovery. It doesn't sound like a serious issue, but given all the injuries he's dealt with in recent seasons as he ages, fantasy managers have to wonder when exactly he'll make his return. Now on the 60-day IL, Scherzer cannot return until at least May 29, but his absence will probably stretch into June.

Ben Lively (forearm) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with a right flexor-tendon strain and recalled right-hander
Zak Kent from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move, according to MLB.com's Tim Stebbins. Lively was pulled from his start early on Monday night against the Milwaukee Brewers after experiencing forearm inflammation, and now he'll miss at least the next two weeks. Fantasy managers should be prepared for the 33-year-old veteran's absence to extend into June. In the short term, it's expected that
Kolby Allard will step into Lively's rotation spot in Cleveland, making him a waiver-wire candidate in AL-only formats. Lively has been solid in his nine starts in 2025 with a 3.22 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, but his 16.3% strikeout rate leaves a lot to be desired for fantasy managers.

Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever
Jason Foley (shoulder) will have season-ending right-shoulder surgery, according to manager A.J. Hinch. Foley recorded a career-best 28 saves for Detroit while also posting a 3.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 46:20 K:BB in 60 relief innings in 2024 in his fourth year in the big leagues. However, he was optioned to Triple-A Toledo to begin the year and then landed on the injured list in mid-April with a right-shoulder strain. Before being shut down, he threw 6 2/3 shutout innings with the Mud Hens with nine strikeouts and no walks in five relief appearances. Fantasy managers holding him in deeper leagues in hopes that he'd return to Detroit at some point this year in a high-leverage role can now cut bait in redraft leagues. Houston Astros manager Joe Espada said that designated hitter
Yordan Alvarez (hand) will not come off the 10-day injured list to rejoin the starting lineup on Tuesday night against the visiting Kansas City Royals. However, Alvarez is trending in the right direction and is expected to rejoin the club soon, possible for Thursday's series opener in Texas against the division-rival Rangers. The 27-year-old landed on the IL with a muscle strain in his right hand that could be the primary culprit for the three-time All-Star's slow start in 2025.
Jose Altuve is serving as the DH on Tuesday, while

Garcia is welcoming a new addition into his family this week and is expected to miss the entire series against the division-rival Atlanta Braves before rejoining the club on Friday before their series opener against the Baltimore Orioles. After a breakout in 2024, the 24-year-old has mostly disappointed in his first 38 games in 2025, going 30-for-133 (.226) with three home runs, six doubles, 13 RBI, six steals and 18 runs scored as the Nats' primary second baseman. Shane Baz at Rogers Centre. Santander miss the three-game sweep over the Seattle Mariners over the weekend with a shoulder injury that he suffered last Thursday. The 30-year-old veteran switch-hitter is back in action on Tuesday, though, and will be looking to get his season average up over .200. Fantasy managers probably aren't in a rush to get him back into their starting lineups, although he does bring a modest three-game hitting streak into Tuesday's action after going 5-for-14 with a homer, four RBI and a run scored in last week's series against the Los Angeles Angels. The Chicago White Sox plan to use right-hander
Jonathan Cannon as their bulk reliever on Tuesday against the hosting Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park after left-handed opener
Brandon Eisert. It will be the second time this year that Eisert has been the opener, with his first coming on April 27 against the Athletics, when he allowed one run on two hits in an inning in an eventual 3-2 loss. Cannon last served in a bulk-relief role after an opener on April 29 against the A's and allowed three earned runs in 7 2/3 innings for a quality start and his longest outing of 2025. The 24-year-old former third-rounder in 2022 out of Georgia has a solid 3.30 ERA in his last five outings, but he well below-average 17.3% strikeout rate in his two MLB seasons and will be facing a dangerous Reds offense in a hitter-friendly ballpark.

Seiya Suzuki went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Monday's 5-2 win over the Marlins. It was the 30-year-old's 10th home run of the season but first since May 1. The Japanese slugger's bat has gone cold over the last week and a half, going 5-for-43 (.116) over the last 10 games and seeing his batting average drop from .295 to .245 after Monday's game. He's having a fine season for fantasy overall hitting third in the Cubs' lineup, collecting 34 RBI and scoring 22 times, although one steal is a bit of a letdown after swiping 16 last season. Still, the right-handed hitters owns a .351 wOBA and 126 wRC+, and should continue to produce with a 16.0 percent barrel rate and 50.0 percent hard-hit rate.
