Omar Narvaez 2020 Outlook: An Offensive Anomaly
5 years agoOmar Narvaez enters the 2020 season on his third team in the last three years, as he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers this offseason. In 2019, he had his best offensive season by far, with a stat line of .278-22-63-55. Narvaez has always hit for a nice batting average and has three-straight seasons hitting at least.275. He is also one of the better catchers in OBP leagues with a .350 or better OBP for four-straight seasons. The conundrum with Narvaez has always been his hitting profile, especially considering his statcast numbers have always been below average. His barrel rate increased last season to 5.3%, his exit velocity to 85.4, and his launch angle to 17.8. These are all below league average, including a 27.5% hard-hit rate, but he's made improvements season to season as he has become an everyday starter. The statcast metrics do not match up with his power production and that makes Narvaez a bit of an anomaly. There are signs that point in the right direction though. Narvaez had an ISO of .182, a wRC+ of 119 and an xwOBAcon of .358 last season. He does a great job of pulling the ball with power and that should translate very well in Miller Park. Narvaez is currently the tenth catcher off the board at pick 196.61 and is a solid option for your fantasy teams if you miss out on one of the elite options.
