Mohamed Sanu 2019 Outlook: The Forgotten Man
6 years agoWith all the talk around Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley, Mohamed Sanu has taken a back seat. While the talk is warranted for sure this could also be good for fantasy owners looking to get Sanu on the cheap in drafts. We already know what Jones is going to do. He will have 170 targets, with Calvin Ridley, Devonta Freeman and Austin Hooper taking somewhere in the region of an additional 275 targets. What does that leave for Sanu? Well, let's take a look.
In the past three seasons, Matt Ryan has attempted 534, 529 and 608 passes respectively. If you add up all the targets given to the players mentioned above this still leaves an additional 112 targets for the rest of the offense. Most of these targets will be headed to Mohamed Sanu as the third receiver. Last season with Freeman out and Ridley limited at times, Sanu garnered 66 receptions, 838 yards and four touchdowns on 94 targets. Even the season prior, with Freeman available, he had 67 receptions for 703 yards and five touchdowns on 96 targets. Sanu is very consistent, and with Steve Sarkisian finally gone and Dirk Koetter back in to pass, pass, pass the number of attempts for Ryan and thereby the number of targets for Sanu could go up.
Should you take Sanu before the double-digit rounds? Heck no. Should you take a chance on him in later rounds as a flier on a high-powered offense? Absolutely. The Falcons are going to be better this season. Not just because of the dismissal of Steve Sarkisian, but the scheduling gods also made their schedule extremely beneficial. In fact, in 16 games they only play outdoors three times. Yes, you heard that correctly. Three games outside a dome. Look for Atlanta to march up and down the field on opponents. Those three wide receivers could have extremely valuable seasons for fantasy owners. While Sanu is the third of the three, he is still a viable draft option late in drafts for upside.
