Mike Williams 2021 Outlook: The Situation Couldn't be Better
4 years agoIt's not hard to see what could have been for Mike Williams. The Chargers selected him with the seventh overall pick in 2017 and he stands at an impressive 6'4", 220lbs. He is touted as one of the best contested catch receivers in the league (although his 27.3% contested catch rate in 2020 was 95th in the league) and tied to Justin Herbert, who just set the record for rookie touchdown passes. How is this not the perfect opportunity for fantasy? In theory, it is. However, as many dynasty owners can attest to, it hasn't happened yet. This is partly due to Williams' constant battle with injury (which some view to be linked with his contested catch ability, throwing himself in the air thinking ball first and health second). Last season was the healthiest of Williams' career, missing only one game. Combined with his upgrade at quarterback, we expected better than a WR45 finish. Keenan Allen is the bonafide WR1, but outside of Allen, the depth chart is tight end Jared Cook, Williams, and a combination of young WR prospects. This gives Williams a clear path to targets on one of the league's top offenses. Will this be the year Williams turns it around for fantasy? Unfortunately, probably not. However, in a contract year and with another offseason working with Herbert, he certainly has the talent and ability to pull something off. I believe Williams will be much like last year's Corey Davis - a player that has burned managers and left a bad taste in their mouth. Williams should fall in drafts, making him one of the few late WRs with the talent, ability, and opportunity to have a massive fantasy ceiling. I would be looking to walk out of drafts with Williams as a high-upside WR4 play in 2021.
