Michael Pittman Jr. 2022 Outlook: Ready to Take the Year Three Leap into Stardom
3 years agoSome wide receivers are known for making that "Year Three" leap into stardom. Michael Pittman Jr. has a chance to take that leap in 2022. He posted a 24% target share last season, good for eighth amongst all receivers. He was also 19th in routes run and third in routes run per team pass play. But because the Colts threw the ball the sixth-least in the league (30.6 times per game), Pittman finished as just the WR24 on a per-game basis. The Colts' game plan last season was simple, hand the ball to Jonathan Taylor. However, Indy made a change at quarterback this offseason, bringing in long-time Atlanta Falcon QB Matt Ryan. He brings with him a career completion percentage of 65.5% whereas Wentz has completed just 62.6% of his career pass attempts. Prior to last season, the Colts had been much more of a pass-heavy team in head coach Frank Reich, averaging nearly 36 pass attempts per game since 2018. Based on Pittman's usage and efficiency in 2021, the projected uptick in passing volume this season should yield an uptick in production for the third-year receiver. With a wide receiver group consisting of Parris Campbell, Keke Coutee, Alec Pierce, Dezmon Patmon, and Mike Strachan, Pittman Jr. should continue to be a target hog as the team's alpha WR1. It wouldn't be shocking to see him get 150 targets and improve on his six touchdowns from a season ago. A top-15 finish is well within his range of outcomes.
