Michael Gallup 2020 Outlook: Rising Tide Lifts All Boats
5 years agoThe Cowboys' addition of CeeDee Lamb in the 2020 NFL Draft certainly relegates to Michael Gallup to WR3 in Dallas but that does not mean that he is no longer fantasy-viable. Playing aside two high-profile receivers like Lamb and Cooper will make it a lot easier for Gallup to continue producing in the NFL. Gallup experienced a breakout season last year at age 23, a good indicator of future success. As the respective WR2, he saw more targets per game (8.1 vs 7.4) than de facto WR1 Amari Cooper. Gallup eclipsed 1000 receiving yards and scored six touchdowns in 2019 and is capable of repeating that or even adding onto it. While CeeDee Lamb will certainly draw his fair share of targets this season, the departures of Jason Witten and Randall Cobb open up over 150 targets to be spread around. Also, there is no reason to assume that Dak Prescott will not repeat his heavy passing volume given that Dallas's defense will be no better than last season, it is even possible for him to top 600 attempts. Gallup's ability to attack the intermediate-to-deep sectors of the field makes him valuable even on lower volume, yet it should be assumed that his target differential this season is marginal, making him a steal at his currently dipping ADP.
