Michael Chavis 2020 Outlook: Strikeout-Prone Power Threat
5 years agoMichael Chavis wrapped up his rookie campaign piling up 18 homers, 46 R, 58 RBI and a .254 BA, but a shoulder injury cut his season short in August. The 24-year-old got off to a hot start with the Red Sox slashing .296/.389/.592 with nine big flies in his first 26 contests. It wasn't as glorious over his next 69 games, however, as he slashed a lowly .237/.294/.386 while struggling just to put the ball in play. If Chavis had the at-bats to qualify last season, he would have finished with the worst K-rate (33.2%) and Whiff% (38.4%) of all big-league hitters. We can attribute these plate discipline struggles to some inexperience, but his 25.6% career K-rate in the minors doesn't completely justify the poor results. Chavis' big-swing mentality certainly won't net him a solid batting average, but he undoubtedly has 25-homer pop even as a hitter in the bottom half of the Boston order. His 229 ADP offers a fair price with the expected power numbers, but his all-or-nothing approach will provide owners with some headaches throughout the season.
