Matt Breida 2018 Outlook: More Touches on the Way?
6 years agoDespite going undrafted, 49ers running back Matt Breida made an unlikely impact for the San Francisco 49ers in his rookie season. The Georgia Southern product saw a 26-percent share of the total touches out of the backfield, while averaging an efficient 4.4 yards per carry. Even though the 49ers signed Jerick McKinnon to be their primary running back, Breida received a vote of confidence when the team decided not to use any of their nine draft picks on the position. Breida will be competing with Joe Williams, Jeremy McNichols, and Raheem Mostert for the backup role, which could end up being more of a “1B” to McKinnon. Breida is the clear-cut favorite to win that spot, which could have some fantasy implications since McKinnon has never carried the ball more than 159 times in a single season. Questions about his durability and whether or not he can handle the bulk of the carries have echoed throughout the off-season. Receiving thirty percent of the touches out of the backfield is a very realistic expectation for Breida in his second season, and that would be a striking resemblance to Tevin Coleman’s role for Kyle Shanahan’s offense in Atlanta in 2016.
The 23-year-old back has an ECR of RB 56 after placing 47th in fantasy production at the position last season. With his usage likely to rise, there is some value in selecting Breida at his current ADP of the 15th round.
