Marquez Valdes-Scantling 2021 Outlook: Can WR Show Consistency?
4 years agoIn three NFL seasons, Packers WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling has been a polarizing player. Despite the Packers lacking any elite wideouts aside from Davante Adams in the past few years, Valdes-Scantling hasn't stepped up in a way that the team and some fantasy managers may have hoped. In his third NFL season, it was the WR's "best" season thus far as he posted 33 receptions for a career-high 690 yards and six scores on 63 targets. That was good for second on the team in receiving yards. Nevertheless, despite a good season last year, is it safe to say Valdes-Scantling is a reliable fantasy option now? Well, probably not. Despite his improved numbers in 2020, there are a couple of factors affecting the WR's fantasy value heading into 2021. First off, the Aaron Rodgers situation. If the QB doesn't return to Green Bay in 2021, Valdes-Scantling's already-low fantasy value will take a hit if unproven QB Jordan Love has to come in. The Packers also added WR Amari Rodgers from Clemson in the draft who will try and carve out a role for himself too, and is no pushover (77/1020/7 last year). On top of all this, Valdes-Scantling has been wildly inconsistent as a weekly fantasy option, not making him the most trustworthy option to draft. Given some new competition, a potential QB change, and his overall lackluster numbers, Valdes-Scantling is nothing more than a player to stash in deeper leagues if needed.
