4 years agoJosh Bell was a disappointment in fantasy last season, but a fresh start with the Washington Nationals should help him return to form. Like many of us, the big first baseman looked lost in 2020. Bell finished the season ranked 41st among 1B eligible players while setting new career-worsts in on-base percentage (.305), slugging percentage (.364), K-rate (26.5%), and wRC+ (78). The good news is that was across only 223 plate appearances. In 2019 Bell was an All-Star. He blasted 37 homers and had 116 RBI with a .936 OPS across 613 PA. It's tempting to look at 2020 as a slump and move on. Unfortunately, Bell's 2019 success was limited to an equally small sample. Bell did an overwhelming amount of his damage early in the season while batting just .233 in the second half. However, even if he doesn't regain his torrid 2019 pace, Bell should improve in 2021. Last year he dealt with uncharacteristic plate discipline issues resulting in an abysmal 0.37 BB/K rate. His career 11.9% walk rate would suggest last season was an anomaly. If healthy, Bell is a near-lock for 30 homers and will have plenty of RBI and run opportunities playing with a better supporting cast than he ever had in Pittsburgh. Bell's durability gives him a safe floor with massive upside if he cuts back on the strikeouts and grounders.
