Jose Berrios 2022 Player Outlook: Reliable Starter in a Good Situation
3 years agoRecently extended Toronto Blue Jays' starter Jose Berrios has become one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball. Berrios ranks fifth in MLB with 647 2/3 innings pitched since 2018, which is a great skill to bring to the table in the current game filled with short starts and bullpen games. He's coming off a great 2021 season where he went 12-9 with a 3.52 ERA, 204 strikeouts, and only 45 walks in 192 innings. His curveball has a lot to do with this, as he has cemented it as his go-to pitch with great results. Throwing the curveball 30.5% in 2021, he produced a 34% whiff rate and a .244 WOBA against, to go along with a sinker that saw a nice improvement after being traded to Toronto last season. While there shouldn't be an expectation for him to vastly improve, Berrios is going to provide fantasy owners with stability that can be hard to find in drafts once you get past pick 100. ATC projects Berrios with 3.87 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 15 quality starts over 189 innings in 2022. With an ADP of 59, Berrios will provide a steady source of innings, strikeouts, and an uptick in wins, with the explosive Blue Jays' lineup backing him up.
