Jonathan India 2022 Player Outlook: Inflated Draft Price After His ROY Season
3 years agoReds' second baseman Jonathan India jumped on to the Major League scene slashing .269/.376/.459 in his first go at it, winning NL Rookie of the Year in the process. He did a little bit of everything in 2021, hitting 21 homers, scoring 98 runs, piling up 69 RBI, and stealing a dozen bases. The most impressive thing about India's game was the plate patience, as he posted strong numbers in both strikeout rate (22.3%) and walk rate (11.3%). Those two numbers plus his foot speed support a high on-base percentage, so he should certainly be upgraded in OBP leagues. However, there should be legitimate concern about the upside with India. His max exit velocity (110.6), barrel rate (9.6%), and ground-ball rate (45%) make him look like an average source of power at best. He also posted a contact rate (77%) that does not really back up the strong strikeout rate. Clearly, this guy is young enough to majorly transform his profile (for the better), but for right now he does not seem likely to be a guy that can have a real game-changing impact on your fantasy team. That makes it tough to spend the top-100 pick on him (his ADP sits at 98), as you would need to see some of that improvement for him to earn that value.
