Joe Mauer Heads Into Final Year Of His Contract With Twins
7 years agoLongtime Minnesota Twin Joe Mauer is coming up on the final year of his eight-year, $184 million contract which he signed back in 2011. The veteran first baseman hit .305 in 2017, his highest batting average since the 2013 season, when he hit .324. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, a high batting average is really all Mauer contributed in 2017. He finished the year with a .305/.384/.417 slash line, seven homers, 69 runs, and 71 RBI. The 140 runs + RBI is a decent total but isn't going to get the job done from a fantasy standpoint at the first base position. Mauer's lack of power has been an issue since his 2009 MVP season when he hit 28 dingers. In his eight seasons since then, he has combined for just 65 homers. Mauer should open the 2018 season on the waiver wire in most standard fantasy leagues.
