Javorius Allen 2019 Outlook: The Buck Stops Here
5 years agoWith Mark Ingram now in Baltimore Javorius Allen takes over the number two role for the New Orleans Saints. Oh, wait, no he doesn’t. That role belongs to Latavius Murray. This makes Allen at best the third wheel and likely not even that.
After a mediocre 2018 in the Ravens offense, Allen was let go in favor of Ingram, Kenneth Dixon, Gus Edwards and rookie Justice Hill. There was no room left in the running back room and he along with troubled Alex Collins were released. Playing in 14 games, Allen had only 41 rush attempts for 110 yards and three rushing touchdowns. On a team who was in the top-two in the NFL in rushing, this type of workload is not a strong vision of the team and their belief in him.
Where Allen can really help a team is in the passing game. While only getting those 41 rushes he also had 35 receptions on 43 targets. In this manner, he could be a small help to the Saints, but not to an extent which would make him fantasy viable. Alvin Kamara is still going to receive the bulk of the work from Drew Brees in this aspect, making even his 2018 totals very unlikely. Not only is Kamara there but even Latavius Murray has some receiving upside, and he is the clear compliment to Kamara in the offense. In 2018 for the Vikings, Murray caught 22 of 26 targets and had 140 rush attempts. These numbers, especially the targets and receptions, should go up in an even more high-powered offense. At 6’3 and 230 pounds, Murray is also the goal line back who will pound the ball and get any fantasy points set up by the stellar play of Alvin Kamara.
Allen is currently not being drafted in fantasy drafts. This is how it should be. If you plan on a pick to get him, don’t. If you already did, he is going to be an early cut, perhaps even before the season. Allen is a training camp player. A player who is on the 90-man roster but there is very little chance makes the 53. So, don’t waste a pick on someone of this ilk.
