Israel Abanikanda 2024 Outlook: Fighting for Backup Duties in a Crowded Backfield
6 months agoNew York Jets RB Israel Abanikanda was limited in his rookie season in 2023 after being stuck behind fellow RBs Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook on the depth chart. After the Jets released Cook midseason, Abanikanda saw limited action with just 22 rushes for 70 yards and also had 7 receptions for 43 yards. Abanikanda, who goes by "Izzy," was done zero favors by the Jets front office this offseason after they took RBs Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis in Rounds 4 and 5 of the 2024 NFL Draft. Abanikanda is an explosive runner with excellent straight-line speed and the ability to take any run to the house, but his situation for playing time in 2024 just got a lot more complicated. We know the bulk of the touches in this offense will go through Breece Hall, but until we know more about how this RB depth will look in the fall, it's difficult to draft any Jets backup RBs with confidence right now. Izzy is nothing but a pure dart throw at this point in only the deepest of formats.
