Hunter Greene 2022 Player Outlook: Reds Top Prospect Has The Chance To Shine
3 years agoHunter Greene is ranked as the Reds number one prospect according to MLB Pipeline and is set to make his MLB debut during the opening weekend of the season. That's largely down to the Reds seemingly giving up on the season before it began by trading a host of their starting roster. But it could turn out to be a blessing if Greene can fulfill the promise he's shown in the Minor Leagues. Greene underwent TJS in 2018, resulting in him missing the whole of 2019 and he didn't return to live game action until last year (due to no MiLB season in 2020). Across Double-A and Triple-A, Greene had a 3.30 ERA, 1.18 WHIP with 139 Ks in 106.1 IP. On the 20-80 grading scale (with 50 being MLB average), MLB Pipeline has Greene with an 80-grade fastball which he flashed this Spring, topping 100 MPH regularly. Despite that, Greene did have some struggles this Spring, putting up a 7.00 ERA over 9.0 IP with the four home runs allowed standing out. While we shouldn't put too much thought into such a small sample during Spring Training, home runs were a problem at Triple-A last season too, with Greene giving up 11 homers in 65.1 IP. That translates into 1.52 HR/9 which ties the sixth-highest among qualified MLB starters in 2021. It's likely Greene is limited to ~120.0 IP this year, with the Reds not looking to be in postseason contention and last year being the first time he topped 100.0 IP as a professional. Providing Greene can keep the home runs in check, he should provide value on his ADP of ~417 this draft season. Just don't expect many wins.
