Hanser Alberto 2020 Outlook: Baltimore's King of Hitting Lefties
5 years agoHanser Alberto came to prominence in 2019 due to his ability to hit left-handed pitching (LHP). His slash line last year against lefties was .398/.414/.534. Only J.D. Martinez had a better batting average against LHP (minimum 100 plate appearances). But that is where Alberto’s positives end. He struggled against right-handed pitching (RHP) to the tune of a .238/.269/.340 slash line and despite his ability to hit LHP, his on-base percentage and slugging numbers were still poor. That’s due to the fact Alberto makes some of the weakest contact in baseball. His hard-hit rate of 21.5% vs RHP and 29.1% vs LHP in 2019 meant he finished in last place of all hitters with 500+ plate appearances. Statcast ranked Alberto in the 1st percentile for average exit velocity (82.8 MPH) last year. Due to the Orioles’ lack of options, Alberto will still be a lineup regular but is close to being unplayable against the majority of RHP. His ADP of ~350 means these shortcomings are built into his draft cost and in leagues with larger rosters and daily moves, you can utilize him in the favorable matchups. His dual-position eligibility at second and third base is nice. However, on such a weak offensive team, you can’t expect more than a boost to your overall batting average from Alberto with ~10 home runs.
