Greg Holland Still Has A Lot In The Tank
7 years agoFree agent closer Greg Holland led the National League with 41 saves last season, but has yet to sign with a team this offseason. The 32-year-old Holland recovered from Tommy John surgery for the Rockies last season, posting a 3.61 ERA, but had an ERA of 2.25 or lower in five of the six months of the season. A rough August (where he allowed 14 runs in 9 1/3 innings) cannot be put to the side, but, for a majority of the 2017 season, Holland was a top-five RP. His strikeouts per nine dipped from when he was a top-five RP in 2013 and 2014 (11 per nine last season), but it was up from his 9.9 strikeouts per nine in 2015. When Holland was at the top of his game in 2013 and 2014, he saved 93 games, posted a 1.32 ERA and 0.89 WHIP, and struck out 193 strikeouts in 129 1/3 innings. He may not get back to that peak in 2018 (or ever again), but his strong play in 2017 shows that he has plenty left in the tank. The biggest issue for Holland were his seven home runs allowed last season and, while people could say that Coors Field was the culprit, four of the seven were allowed outside of Colorado. Four of those seven home runs were also allowed in August, but Holland did bounce back to allow only two earned runs in 9 2/3 September/October innings, locking down five saves and striking out 12 batters while walking only two. If an MLB team takes a chance on the fact that Holland's one poor month was an outlier, he could have top-10 RP upside in the right situation. Unfortunately, teams like the Rockies and the Cardinals have gone elsewhere with their closer and Holland may need an injury to close in 2018.
