7 months agoColorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez was knocked around by the Angels on Tuesday in an ugly tune-up start. Marquez was hit hard as he gave up a pair of home runs as well as eight other hits in just 4 2/3 innings. After the game, he told reporters the struggles had to do with placement of his fastball, and manager Bud Black confirmed that Marquez was regularly leaving the pitch high in the zone. A new trend in baseball has featured pitchers running fastballs up in the zone as hitters have keyed in on lower-level strikes, but it’s a dangerous approach to take as the difference between a strikeout and a rocket to the seats can be just a hair. Marquez has been a popular target this spring after he posted a stellar second-half of the season last year, but no one’s really sure who will be showing up in Denver in April. Taking flyers on starting pitchers is part of the game, but owners might want to think twice before taking one on someone who pitches in Coors Field.--Billy Stonick - RotoBaller
